What is the difference between the two powders? Is there a difference?

I plan on reloading for my Mosin Nagant, 91/30 7.62x54r using Sierra 150gn Pro Hunters bullets. Mostly for plinking.

Would Varget or Reloader 15 be better?

thanks,

IMR 4895 made in Canada.
H 4895 made in Australia.
Unless Hodgdon has flip flopped sources again this week.

Burn rates are very close, you will not likely see a difference in a military rifle.
Likewise Varget or Re15. Both good stuff, but can the MN see it?

I believe H4895 is faster burning than IMR4895 and more temp stable. If I'm wrong on that please correct me. I'm pretty sure that they are not interchangeable if I look at my manuals that show different loads to achieve same velocities with the same bullet. It takes less H4895 and more IMR4895 to equal same speed, at least per the Hornady book

For my mosin i use 46.5 gr imr 4895 under the 150gr sierra pro hunters.

Load works good for plinking out to 100yds( havent tested past 100 yet) but dont

take my word on load data(use at own risk)

H4895 can also be used for reduced loads if that is of interest to you. You can find info on Hodgdon's website.

H4895 is ideal for old military plinkers for this reason. H4895 can be reduced as low as 60% of max.

The quick and dirty answer is they were born from the same source but over time have become slightly different. I personally would not swap loading date between the two. There is that much of a difference especially at the high end.

Yes, H4895 is slightly faster than IMR4895 but according to the charts H4895 developers slightly less pressures while delivering the same velocities. In my applications I have found both to be very accurate and either will serve you well.

True, but it is nothing new and not limited to the Aussie copy.
DuPont said long ago that IMR 4895 was usable down to 3/5 of maximum.

Yes this is what I am interested in (downloading). I don't appreciate the Milsurp Kick. I still want a good load but downloaded. I am currently using TrailBoss, but can only get 1450fps at best and it drops at 100yds.

From what I can tell, one is Green, and the other is Black.

Charge for charge, I can't tell a difference in velocity over my chronograph screens, at least a difference that can't be explained with lot to lot differences. The powders we shoot are blended to an average pressure by charge weight. As for the assertions that H4895 produces more velocity for less pressure, I don't have a pressure gage to verify. What I can verify, that you can stick a case with H4895 just as you can stick a case in the chamber with IMR 4895. And if you stick a case in the chamber you better have a cleaning rod to knock the thing out!

Both powders shoot outstandingly well over a wide variety of cartridges. There are three powders that I consider to be "4895", that is IMR 4895, H4895 and AA2495. I was told by Accurate Arms that AA2495 is a copy of IMR 4895, but stupidly, they call it something different and confuse everyone. It is also a great powder.

My recommendation: Buy by price!
