Where I am now
I don't post often but I just had to share this and ask your advice. My wife has been very slow to warm up an interest to guns and shooting. There have always been guns in the house and I have asked her to accompany me to the range and to gun shows repeatedly over the years and she has never shown much interest. Today, when I got home from the pistol range, totally out of the blue, she says.. "You know what? .. I think what I would like is one of those pump shot-guns because of the intimidating noise it makes when you cock it ...I could take lessons and I would feel safer when I'm alone."

Well, let me tell you! Now, not only do I get to look for my next gun, but I've got a bright green light to shop for one for her too! What a wonderful day! Plus, I'll take a defensive shotgun course with her and we can try to build on that.

I'm thinking a Mossberg 500 Bantam in a 20 gauge might be about right, she's kind of petite and my Remington 870 is really not comfortable for her to shoulder. Any other suggestions of models for us to look at? ...she's really set on a pumper. Thanks.

I got my wife an 870 youth in 20 gauge which she also uses for deer hunting. It lives behind the bedroom door (no kids) where she can get to it if needed. She also has a glock 17 on the nightstand.

First choice: Remington 870 20ga. Youth model. It has a shortened stock and a fore-end suitable for smaller frames.

Second choice: Mossberg 500 20ga. Youth model.

I've owned and used both, and both are good, but I'd give the Remington top billing overall by a short head.

One more vote for the 870 Youth Model. Only downside is, you may wind up liking it as much as she does!

Make sure you get the sporting foregrip it's longer, makes it easier for women to reach.

Also consider the Winchester 1300 in 20ga.

Thanks for the input all, we will look at the Rem. 870 youth as well...don't know why but I wasn't aware the 870 came with a shorter stock too, but checked their site and sure enough.

Yes Rupestris it was a glorious thing to hear! :D

Sounds like your having a good day !

I also shoot a 20 ga. (also for HD) and any of the top three Remington, Winchester or Mossberg are good choices in their youth models .
