Can anyone explain to me how to ship my hand gun (legal) from California to myself in Alaska? I will be there for approx. 6 mo. Can I just ship it by Fedex or UPS to myself as long as I follow their shipping packaging ? Do I have to do anything else? Thanks in advance for any and all info you can give me.

Hello Miss Anne.

This should probably be posted in the Legal section so don't be surprised if it gets moved there.

It's been discussed before so you should get some good info.

One of the things that came up was using the ferry from WA to Alaska but I dont remember enough to share with you with accuracy.

Welcome to THR. Stick around. We have a few active members that are in Alaska.

While legal under Federal law to ship your own firearm to yourself in another state, neither FedEx or UPS will accept a nonlicensee to nonlicensee shipment.

And since only dealers and manufacturers can mail a handgun via USPS, you're left with these options:
1. Take it with you if you fly. Not as carry-on but in checked luggage.
2. Ship it to a licensed dealer in Alaska. You'll need to do a 4473 and pass NICS to retrieve it. You'll need to provide the AK dealer with a government issued photo ID showing your name and residence address in AK. If your photo ID shows your CA address, then you can provide alternate government issued documentation that shows your name and AK address.

I tried to get more info on the taking of handguns through Canada to Alaska. IIRC that could be done by having Canadian customs seal the box or container on entry to Canada, and if it was sealed on exit, things were OK. That no longer is true, based on info on U.S. and Canadian web sites. A handgun with a barrel over 4.1" long can be brought into Canada by non-residents, but there are complicated forms and a fee.

So unless Canada can be avoided, the idea of shipping a gun to am Alaska FFL dealer (make arrangements in advance) would seem to be the best bet.

On my last (and I do mean last) trip to Canada, I must have triggered some kind of profile. My car had no NRA or pro-gun stickers, and I had no gun or ammo or anything gun related in the car. But a woman customs officer harassed me for a half hour, even asking my wife if I was telling the truth, all the while fiddling with her holster and gun. I though she was going to shoot both of us, just because we were foreigners. I have never had that happen in any other country to that extent.

Sorry, Canada, you have some beautiful scenery and some nice people, but your officials are nasty and whatever good things there may be in Canada, I won't be visiting them.

Yeah. Dont take guns through Canada, Ive gone into Canada with a few cases of beer in the truck and practically gotten a high five going through the border but I wouldnt even leave a shell case rattling around in back for fear of being crucified..
