Hand Held Belt Fed?

In Commando ( an Arnold shoot 'em up) people are using hand held, belt fed weapons. Do such things exist, if so, do they work?

Oh, they exist, and they work. But they're almost universally class-3.

Also, it's not that they're "hand held", it's that they're just not mounted how they're supposed to be. Maybe Arnold and Sylvester can operate an M60 standing, but the only thing I would put in danger would be passing birds.
 
There have been plenty of customized M1919s and such made up for range play.

They're just for yukks, but have a certain charm.

One of the local dealers has a picture of a guy shooting a ~14" barreled M1919 with a "chainsaw" type top handle, and rigged up to a feed chute and a backpack ammo box. Cute.

Sort of along the same vein

Not quite a year ago, some Iowa National Guardsmen made a backpack mounted ammo dispenser for their MK. 48 Machine guns....The gunner would have his machine gun along with the 500 round belt coming out of the dispenser. This allows the gunner to man his gun all by himself and not have to rely on ammo bearers

I have not seen predator in a long time, but didn't they use a GE M134 with some rigged up forward grip on it. Now thats what I need for squirrel huntin';)

Sort of... there's one last batch that's supposed to be released soon, it'll be an upgraded version with adjustable sights and some other improvements, but the builder is pretty much planning to retire soon.

One could, theoretically, fire a .50 caliber M2 as a hand-held weapon. You just have to be a big sumb*tch. The Shrike upper is designed to go on a standard AR lower (SA or FA) and is probably more manageable. I have a couple of the Lakeside uppers as pictured above. Fun and cheap(er) to shoot. Another fellow is making a belt-feed mechanism running 12-gauge shotgun shells. Should be interesting.
 
When I saw the title, I couldn't help but think of this. Stretching the "handheld" part, but still a hoot. :D
