Bought a new Taurus ULTRA-LITE in a 44 special this week end.
Does not have a painful snap/slap when shot. But is more like a fast hard push.
Shoots very well though, 10 paces, pattern 1" wide. 2" tall, 5 rounds.
50 yards would be unhealthy to be in front of with all aimed shots.
Does take an effort to aim with the short site radius.
Double action single handed takes a cylinder or two to learn.
Went through 300 or more fast rounds in 2 days and the barrel/receiver never got to hot to touch.

240gr. lead with gas check, 4.5 gr Red Dot

Speer calls that a starting load, so I would expect it to be mild to shoot.

My .44 Special is a Taurus 431, 3". I like to shoot stout loads from it, I guess because I get along fine with my .44 Magnum, given reasonable charges interesting to shoot for more than a few rounds. These are also closer to SD ammo I use for CCW. My current range load is 7.5 gr SR4756 and 180gr LRNFP. No chrono reading but estimated at 800fps.

I also own a Taurus 445 which I assume is the gun you are referring to. I tried AA#5, Win 231, Alliant Power Pistol, Unique, and Universal Clays with a 240LSWC a while back. All loads were tested for accuracy and ran over a chronograph. After the dust settled, I found Skeeter Skelton's load couldn't be bested. They are stout and by no means an every day load for this gun.

Unique 6.5 705 712 712 719 707 711 14
6.9 778 782 780 776 783 779 7
7.2 789 793 817 790 782 794 35
7.5 853 835 863 868 860 855 33

Above are the ladder tests from my testing. The temp that day was around 70 and sunny. Please note that these loads are over max by today's manuals however after having shot 500+ of these through the 445 with no ill result I have no reservations on continuing to do so.

I had the same experience with my Ruger Alaskan .454 casull with a 2.5" barrel. Was expecting a painful snappy recoil with a lot of barrel flip, instead had a hard sharp push into my palm and no effect on my wrist.

I think it is the excellent Hogue grips that come with the gun. They seem to acutally absorb and redistribute the recoil.
