Can anybody suggest a quality yet affordable handgun safe. Was thinking about something like those eletronic ones you see in hotels with the keypad, etc. Need to be able to fit 2 1911 Governments, 1 Beretta 92FS, 1 Colt Woodsman, and 1 S&W Airweight .38. Thanks in advance!

For five handguns, one of the lockable "box" safes will be too small. The easiest and most cost-effective solution would be to look at the Sentry safes at Wal-Mart or Sam's Club. You can get a cube-shaped one for a hundred dollars, or a bit more for a larger one. They come with keypad and/or traditional locks, and they'll certainly hold up to half-a-dozen handguns plus a few magazines or boxes of ammo. You can also secure them to a floor or wall for greater protection against theft.

The Wal-Mart safe tbeb mentioned uses the same electronic lock as the Gunvaults, although with a different layout to the buttons. It falls between the two GunVault models in size and uses a removable shelf that lets you keep two guns in it and have access to either. I use one in my travel trailer. You probably could store five guns in it but they'd have to be packed in pretty tight. I wouldn't count on being able to grab one quickly.

BTW, the safe is easily removed from the bracket as tbeb says (and has a nice carry handle on the top) but it can only be removed with the safe door open. Spare brackets are $10 from the manufacturer and may be cheaper elsewhere. The safe is too tall to fit under the seats on any of my vehicles however it looks like it would fit under the rear seat on a Jeep Wrangler or similar with the bracket to lock it down.

Not a bad deal for 70 bucks! :D I've been thinking about getting a second bracket to fasten mine down in the house but I'll probably just get a second safe at the price.

All the options mentioned are interesting, but I still think the Sentry personal safes are far and away the best - not to mention most economical (at Wal-Mart) - solution. See here for details of the safes - and don't worry about the MSRP, that's way higher than Wal-Mart actually charges for them.

I usually refer people to the "residential security container" threads for this discussion . . . .

Regarding conventional firesafes - my understanding is that they are intended for documents and that the way they get their fire rating is via a moisture impregnated insulation that gases off in a fire to keep the documents moist and not flammable inside.

Moisture = NG for firearms and ammunition so unless it's specifically a gun firesafe, I'd look into the moisture part.
