Hi I'm looking to get my girlfriend a pistol to protect herself when I'm not around. She can operate all my pistols without any problem. I'm confident that she has the hand strength to pull back on the slide and shoot just about any handgun. I ran this idea by her and she likes it, her only stipulation is that the gun is "shiny with black grips. I like the idea of her having an all stainless pistol. What I'm looking for is something that is reliable, user friendly, chambered in 9mm, that isn't too big to be concealed in her slender 110 pound frame, or too heavy that she will leave it at home. I have been looking at the Karh K9 and sig p239 hd. If you have any experience with either of these please let me know, but what I'm really looking for are your suggestions for other pistols to research that fit what she and i are looking to open my mind and broaden my search.

I would choose compact revolver with light metal frame in cal. .38/.357 and use std. pressure .38spl loads in it. Ruger and S&W also offer such guns with partially plastic frames. The .38 is just differently shaped rimmed version of the 9x19.

I think if she is comfortable shooting the K9 that would be a good choice

Yes let her get what she likes and wants. Unlike many others I rely on a six-shooter. Guns like that one have been used by USAF, military intelligence, and Swedish AF. I suspect that is why I like this gun. If someone comes from behind and uses hammer on back of my head what difference will it make? When it comes to gun selection some peoples stupidity never ceases to amaze me.

Let her pick it out, as long as it's a quality gun just go with it.

My wife (of small stature) highly recommends the S&W M&P9C to women in general. It seems to be easy to rack, shoot and not too big for her hands. Kahrs are great guns, and very easily concealed. I have a pm9 that both my wife and I like.

This is true - Has she considered a Craftsman or Stanley 16oz'er instead of an expensive handgun?

No. If someone comes from behind with a hammer it will make no difference what kind of gun I'm carrying. You know like the guy in Moscow who did 60 but was convicted of 47 if I remember correctly. I think she should get what she likes provided is has TKO of 4.5 or higher.

There are no "girl guns" in the same way that there are no urban guns or country guns.

Help her get enrolled in good training and obtain her CCW permit. Facilitate her trying any gun she wants to try and don't push her into a choice or a timeframe to choose. Further, when the time comes for paperwork, let her do the whole deal. That way, the gun is really hers. Once she owns it, make sure she has opportunities to train with it and support her efforts to sort out how best to carry it.

In short, it's gonna be hers, so she makes the rules about how it's selected and acquired. Your roll is to provide opportunities. Step in ONLY if she's about to get taken; even then, tread lightly.

Her decision, her hobby and probably her money.

This means she gets to chose it. considering you yourself said she's a big girl and can handle any of your guns ... Why are you even involved here?

Kahr K9 or P9 would be a good choice based on what my wife likes.
I put Agrip on my wife's P9.

no, nobody reads the stickies and EVERYONE thinks there is some magic perfect "ladies' gun" that, if bought, will turn their female family into range buddies

There is!! It's whatever one she wants!!

Advice from someone married 34 years, in a row, to the same woman.

BOTH of you read Pax's Thecorneredcat.com

Lots of good info for both.

THEN, take her to rental range, let HER pick out several to try and then buy what SHE wants - even if it isn't YOUR choice of make or cartridge - if SHE likes it, she'll practice with it
