My girlfriend is trying to find a gun to buy for carrying, she plans on carrying concealed. she likes my XD but wants something a little easier to conceal. I've been doing research on a gun that might be good for her and we have gone and shot the Karh P9 and the Sig P239. she didn't like the the Karh but did like the Sig. the only problem is the P239 is a bit spendy plus if possibly i would rather have her carry a safe action like the XD. Does anyone have any suggestions for me to look into? And could anyone tell me about the Sig P238? That is one i was looking at but have never held it or shot it.

Careful Bub, I'm sure there are tons of guys here that will be happy to take your girlfriend and help pick out a firearm.

My ex tried carrying several different firearms. Her favorite was a Para carry 9 or a glock 33. She was small framed and waaaay not thick so it was hard for her to conceal anything while still dressing the way she (and I! ) liked. She needed something thin or she just wouldn't carry it. Sexy women usually don't like to wear baggy clothes around the clock and I don't blame them. They didn't make it then, but now walther has the perfect solution...the pps.

She eventually settled on a pocket 380 option. Although, in winter during jacket season she frequently confiscated my Kimber Pro CDP II. :cuss:

Thanks for the post

yeah my brother carries one. but she wants something single stacked because the XDs and glocks are a bit wide. The width is the big issue bacause womans clothing isn't as loose as mens.

I have Berettas, Smith and Wessons, Rugers, and have experience with Glocks, Sigs, Colts, and numerous other brands. IMHO the best concealed carry pistol is the one that you WILL carry. I bought a S&W MP40c for concealed carry and it was bulky. I carried it sometimes but not always. I bought a Kel-Tec PF-9 however and it's the best concealed carry pistol in production if you ask me and now I am NEVER unarmed. It's thin, affordable, ridiculously accurate, and lightweight. There's definitely more popular brands like Sig (heavy) XD's (bulky) and Glocks (also bulky) but you need to get what works for you. I'll post a link to a review of the pistol.

A buddy of mine's small-framed wife carries a PPS and loves it. I got a chance to put 30 or so rounds through her's and the beavertail really pounds on my first thumb-knuckle (ouch). Might be just the ticket, but let her shoot one first.

Agreed on the pounding on the thumb knuckle. The PPS and the PF-9 that I suggested have this problem. More comfortable to me is the Ruger LCP but then you're talking about carrying a hard to be accurate .380. Also the PPS had a pretty hefty price tag last time I checked as does the LCP. I think I bought my new PF-9 from Gander Mtn. for $250.

Since we're talking ladies and carry here, we'll have to stay as slim as possible. The P239 is going to be too thick. It's not all that much thinner than the double stack models. Girls I know love their tight jeans and so waistband carry isn't going to be a workable option. Ankle carry, however, will work fine. The P238 had some problems in the beginning, but I think that's been resolved. That's a fine choice. The LCP would be awesome. I shot one once, it wasn't easy with my large hands, but I'm sure a female would be fine with it. The slide was easy to rack, it weighs next to nothing, and talk about slim.

In my experience, anything that is a double stack is too fat to conceal comfortably.

Start with single stack anythings...9mm would be a great starting point.

Work from there.

What did she not like about the P9? It is about as thin as you are going to get in a 9, if she liked the P239, maybe she needs a bit of a heavier gun to absorb the recoil and a K9 would fit the bill? Not that Kahr is going to be any cheaper than a used P239.

Thanks for the posts.

hmphargh: when she shot the P9 it pounded on her thumb knuckle and neither of us like the trigger pull.

i would suggest the ruger LCR for simplicity, and a seecamp .32 or a beretta 25, .22, or .32 bobcat/tomcat series if she likes autos., though the only .22 round i would consider betting my life on would be the CCI stinger.

The LCP is a perfectly sized pistol, but it may be very unpleasant for her to shoot.

I really despise the .32 cartridge, but it is better than nothing. The K-T P32 may be a good choice for her, if she will not carry anything larger. I know one small framed female who is recoil averse and she carries a P-32. I wish she'd carry an LCP, but she just won't.

If she liked the P239 (in 9mm I'm guessing...) she may like the S&W 39xx series (more specifically 3913) - Single stack 8+1 & very little recoil.

you can find p239s used on sale or at gun shows for 500 to 550. & police trade ins. i dont know if it is ok to give you a web site to look at or not. but if you look you can find them. i bought a new one a week ago in 40cal & night sights for 720. he had used 357sigs dao/dak for 550. sigs are accurate & reliable. she may also like the 232. but if this is for her let her pick. you might not like it if someone picked your gun for you.not trying to be mean, just trying to make sure she is happy with it & practice with it. best of luck to both of you.

Yeah. she is sitting here with me reading all the replies with me. I would never pick her gun for her she's perfectly capable, we're just looking for some advice. though im sure you're just saying that because thats what lots of people do. no offense taken.

Some women seem to like the Kahr. Slim and they fit the hand very well. Track one down and see if she can manage the trigger. They tend to be a bit of a longer pull.

trigger pull and thumb knuckle

Unfortunately, I've never really found small pistols very pleasant to shoot, but as stated, any gun is better then no gun. I've found snubnose revolvers feel a little better then small autos to shoot, but they also seem harder to be accurate with too. The PPS and the PF-9 might be a few of the best options but I think the PPS going to be out of the price range she was planning to spend.

I would have had three suggestions, but since you said she didn't like the Kahr then I have two. Walther PPS and S&W 3913. The 3913 will probably be tough to test shoot since they don't make them anymore, but I have never heard anyone say a bad thing about them. I have had the pleasure to shoot the PPS and must say that for a compact 9mm it is absolute pleasure to shoot.

Best of luck.

Shawn
