Handguns in the home: A question of legality.

This is a simple, straight forward question.

Is it legal, in the state of Texas, for a person over the age of 18 but under the age of 21, living on their own, to keep a handgun given to them by their parents in the home? Not carried on the person, not in a car, but in their home.

If so, what documentation, if any, would the person need to provide in the case of any legal trouble?

It's actually a bit better than that. It is legal in Texas to carry a handgun on or about your person while you are on your own premises or premises under your control. As of 9/1/2007, it will be legal to carry a handgun in your vehicle without a license, as long as it isn't "in plain view".
