You see rifle barrels chromed all the time, but I don't know of any handgun barrels that are. Is there a reason for this? Are there any handguns that have chrome lined barrels? The Makarov maybe?

The old GI 45's had chrome bores and chambers. I don't know when it started but the barrels in the National Stock System right now are plated.

Chrome is plated to the bores for corrosion resistance. Corrosive ammo would eat up a bore within a day or two if not cleaned, and often in combat cleaning wasn't going to happen for a while. Handgun ammunition has not been corrosive primed a LONG time so the plating isn't needed anymore.

Beretta is pretty good about chrome-lined barrels
look at the model 8000 Cougar, the 9000S, the CX4 Storm and the 92-series (or at least the M9, in fact it was a requirement in the XM9 trials).

Except for Beretta, I don't know any manufacturer making chromed barrels in the civilian versions. I think all Russian and Chinese arms have chrome plated barrels.

S&W once made up a big bunch of M1911 barrels on a government contract, then found to their horror that they were all a tad oversize in the bore. So they chrome plated the bores, which was a LOT cheaper than scrapping them and starting over. The army was happy with the "free" chrome plating, S&W was happy not to lose money, and the GI's were happy about easier cleaning.

S&W seems to have some problems with those 45 ACP bores. My 4506 has a barrel that measures (groove) 0.4515" at the chamber end and 0.4520" at the muzzle end. Guess how inaccurate this combination is! Don't know if I want to try another barrel or go back to monkeying with 1911's.

The Beretta Storm has a chrome lined barrel?

Are you sure? I went back to look at a Storm today. This keeps looking like a better & better idea. :) However, there IS that Hi Power.

Decisions.
