I’m interested in building my collection of handloader magazines that have articles I’m interested in, in regards to 44 special.

I have handloader 236, 260, and 319.

236, for those that don’t know has a large article about the 44 special and includes data for +p loadings to the 25,000 psi range.

260 is the issue that they reviewed the NM flattop Blackhawk in 44 special, with load data. A lot of which mirrors issue 236s data, but some is new.

319 has an article on light specials and has limited data, but includes some newer powders that might be useful.

I’m aware of 312 and 263 but have neither.

And I recently became aware of handloader #5 Jan/feb 1967 that references Keith’s loadings, not just his heavy loads.

I’d be glad to hear others suggestions on articles to acquire. If it’s available online I’d be glad for a link to it so I can vet it before finding a hard copy. I’m a hard copy kinda guy.

JUST Handloader? I have a PDF of a 1949 issue of American Rifleman with an article by George W. Rice, "'Magnumizing' the .44" and it's all about the earliest .44Spl Super-Duty loads.

No, no just handloader. I’m interested in anything related to 44 special. I say handloader because In unaware of other sources and I know I can order a back issue. That’s how I got issues 236 and 260.

I have every issue of Handloader from 1966 to 2020. There are hundreds of articles on 44 special, so you would have to spend a good deal to buy all of them in paper.

Handloader #308 June 2017 has an extensive Pet Loads .44 Special update article by Brian Pearce. I was especially interested in his suggested loads with CFE. However, the article isn’t just about loads but also includes information about the various guns through the years including throat sizes and groove diameter. These are all standard pressure loads. Issue 312 that you said you were aware of is the exact same type of article by Brian except those loads are all +P.

Just started loading for the 44 Special before that didn't give it much attention.

Thanks for the suggestion and information. This is exactly the type of info I’d like to know before buying a back issue.

I certainly don’t want to blindly buy back issues. That’s why I started this thread, in hopes to get some idea of the types of articles available.

I started a binder years ago just for the 44 special articles about loading's. Its about 8" Thick and starts in 1949 thru 2021. I'm constantly looking for relevant articles to add with it.
At one time I had in my possession 14 each 44 Special single actions and revolvers. Probably owned at one time or another close to 30 of them. 44 Specials got under my skin at an early age, 1966. No I didn't own one then, just started reading about them, Couldn't afford one til 1974 when I obtained a Charter Arms Bulldog used from a local Fireman in Fullerton Calif. who said it was his "Shark Gun" ( He had a big boat ) Paid 100.00 cash. Elmer Keith and Skeeter Skelton were all good reads.
Have saved all my gun rags and Handloader mags since early 70's. Last 10 years I've gone to Ebay and acquired even earlier issues from 50's and 60's just cause I can't stand to even open a gun rag printed today. Yesterdays articles are so much more interesting.

I understand, when I have time I will go though mind again for you; there's just a lot on 44 special.

I recently posted about an issue I have (or perhaps it was an American Rifleman issue, I can't remember) touting the 44 Mag. I cannot remember any of those old issues having 44 Special-centric articles but I'll look here in the next few days. It's a big box of old mags to go-through.

I do have a collection that my grandfather and father willed-to-me of Handloaders Digest. It's in my man cave reloading room. I can, and shall and will, go-through those looking for something that might fit your needs. They left me issues #1(1962] through #15 (1996) maybe? I'll have to double-check. Thirty or forty years worth ... probably thirty-four years worth or thereabouts if I am not mistaken.

BTW, 44 Sp was/is a great round imho. I reload for mine. It may be the perfect wheel gun round honestly.

I appreciate the effort. Reloading the 44 is my main focus in my query but also hunting or just stories on it are of interest to me. It’s a great round to reload and has a balance others don’t seem to have.

I happened upon the link to this article and it is a great resource. https://www.handloadermagazine.com/44-s-w-special-pet-loads Thanks again for suggesting it.

Don’t know if this will help but there’s some good information in it.

If you can come up with an issue of Handloader 293 Brian Pierce has an article specifically about loads for the 69 in it.
Thanks. I appreciate the effort. The link you posted is the same as the one I posted in the post above yours though. If I hadn’t have already found it, I would have been excited to have it.

Sorry, in fact I was quoting your post and simply responded in the wrong place. Old age I guess.
