(And yes, mods, this is gun-related)

Well, first off I'd like to congratulate Azrael256 on a happy birthday (he's now 22). Exactly one year ago today, he was 21 (duh) and introduced me to firearms.

It was one of those days where you sleep late, eat a simple lunch of a sandwich and chips, and head off to Wally World for some dirt-cheap ammo. Included in the bunch were Azrael256, me, three other guys, and a girl. AFAIK myself, the girl, and one of the other guys had never shot a gun before in our lives. Once out in rural Oklahoma in the Lawton area with 2 pump shotties, one SxS, a Marksman BB pistol (mine, as I had no actual interest in "real" guns yet  ), and a Winchester lever 30-30 we spent the afternoon blasting away clay pidgeons, bits of paper, lumps of dirt, and any other naturally occuring, inanimate reactive target.

It was the first time I had ever fired a gun. And thus far, I've been doing a pretty good job of not letting it be the last. We didn't even get out there without hearing the four rules heard first (to be credited to Azrael256), and in the course of the day learned the dangers of FTFs, FTEs, and how holding a shotgun 3" away from your shoulder can leave lasting... um... consequences. ;)

The evening was spent around a campfire, with freshly-grilled steaks, a case or two of Shiner Bock, some tequila, and some Jack Daniels (all guns were safely stowed, and we had pretty much shot all the ammo we had for 'em anyhow). Once nicely... uh... settled in, we sang the night away to a slew of Pat Green songs accentuated by the occasional Rodney Kerrington outburst :D .

It was a night to remember. Going back to college on Monday was a difficult task, but we all seemed to do pretty well. Not long after, I rented an M-1A at a local range and proceeded to satisfy an addiction that only seems to have increased over the year. :) I finally got my first rifle, a Marlin 60, about three months later by a recommendation of Azrael's. When we got back to my parent's house, he then showed me how to diassemble it, clean it, put it back together, etc. He had introduced me to The Firing Line (although I wasn't into guns before it closed down), and then later to The High Road, where we both remain to this day.

Now that the embarassing's over, I'd just like to say

and of course the 22 gun salute...

And Happy Birthday to G35, TarpleyG, 40SUPER, Ram, Tommy Gunn, Tweak, StarPower, NinjaLawyer, JPNH, TWHughes, and TMix as well! :)

Sounds like it was a great birthday party a year ago. I spent my formative years (9th grade through 1st year in college) in Lawton back in the early 70's. My father was the minister at First United Methodist, over by Tomlinson Junior Highschool. We used to go to an old quarry area on a piece of property out on the highway toward Cache to target shoot. Last time I was in Lawton that entire area was covered with houses.

Time marches on...

Anyway, a big happy birthday to all and keep burning that ammo.

Thanks for the b-day wishes. Sucks to be 35 already... I was laying in bed the other night and suddenly realized that I may only have another 35 to go. Crap, that was scary. Time for happy thoughts...

What he's not telling you is that we had a shooting contest that day. Our friend Todd and I blasted away at clays until we ran out of shells, so we decided we would settle our little contest with another "shooting" contest. After about a gallon of Cuervo between us, we had an MP friend give us a field sobriety test, which was, quite literally, in the middle of a field. I couldn't walk a straight line... not by a long shot. Our friend tossed a handful of change on the ground and told me to pick up 36 cents. I saw a quarter, a dime, and a penny first. Lucky me! After walking a disturbingly straight line, it was Todd's turn. He scooped up all of the change, and said "Well, there's 36 cents in there somewhere.

We also made that girl we took with us an honorary good 'ol boy. She may be 5'6" and skinny as a rail, but anybody who's willing to pull both triggers on that SxS is tough as nails in my book.

Stellarpod, we did a college recruitment deal at that church about three weeks later. Needless to say, we didn't mention our previous activities in that area... heh... Oh, and GO CENTRAL BRONCHOS!!!

Todd and I still haven't settled our shooting contest. I think that well justifies a fresh case of shells and some quality time with a clay thrower
