I been eyeballin' another 1858 Remington. My local candy store has had one for the past 6 months ... a Pietta stainless steel/fixed sight model (date code BU). The asking price was $200 (front post sight is buggered up from what looks like a pliers). Bear in mind, considering Cabela's prices, $200 in itself was a good deal ... but I asked when they were going to be on sale, and one thing led to another, and I got it for $175.00

Looks like I get ta do some cleaning and tuning. Deburr the springs, make sure there's no burrs or nasty machining marks in the hammer and hand slots. I just finished tearin' it down, and the initial review doesn't indicate any major problems ... but there's a lotta black oily gunk in there that needs to be scrubbed out.

I've been toying with cutting one down by about an inch, not enough to have to mess with the loading lever catch post. My new toy one is a prime candidate for cutting down, due to the front sight issue and I won't havta worry about re-bluing it!

Once I get her cleaned up and tuned a little, I'll take some pictures.

Fathers Day

...And how great that morn will be when she belches smoke for the first time!

Here is the cylinder. Just wanted a "before modification" picture of it-

All said, I put 5 cylinders through the pistol ... with no binding or difficulties from fouling.
Cylinder #1: 30 grains Goex FFFg, Speer .454 Dia Swagged RBl
Cylinder #2: 25 grains Goex FFFg, Speer .454 Dia Swagged RB
Cylinder #3: 28 grains Goex FFFg, Speer .454 Dia Swagged RB (Paper Cartridge)
Cylinder #4: 28 grains Goex FFFg, Speer .454 Dia Swagged RB (Paper Cartridge)
Cylinder #5: 35 grains Goex FFFg, Speer .454 Dia Swagged RB

It seems to be hitting just to the left of POA at 25 paces.
Saturday evening I did some prep/tuning which consisted of cleaning the burrs off of the mainspring, honed the hammer a bit, put a taper on the end of the cylinder pin, polished the bore of the barrel with simichrome paste, and seasoned all the parts with Remington lube. Friday, I'll do a bit more polishing and tuning ... I'm not the type to do a full blown tear-down and tune all at once, I'm more of the do a bit here, and try it out, do a bit more and try it out, etc, etc.

The only disappointment I had, other than the hand slot looking to be cut a bit too deep (towards the outside of the frame), was due to my nice Reminton Powder flask. When I got out to my plinking area, the flask seemed a bit lighter in weight than it should have been ... should have been plumb full of Goex 3F, but ... the solder joint had split dang near all the way around (between the folded over tabs) :fire: :cuss: . I'm still in mourning over it :( . Anyone know how to fix them?

Welcome to the forum, and a pretty pistol you have there! As far as the flask, if its an original, I'd try to get it repaired. If not, they are rather inexpensive( I bought mine at Cabelas for $25). Good luck and good shooting:evil:
