I have been playing with my semi-custom Remington 700 .308 on and off for almost a couple of years now. I bought it used and it has a "mil-spec(?)" 24" heavy tube, an HS Percision stock, and action + trigger work done to it.

The range (sorry for the poor, cell phone picture quality) was 92 yards, as dictated by the topography I had to work with. Load was 44.5g Reloader 15 and a 165g Sierra Pro Hunter HPBT (CCI Primer and Hornady brass).

Shot off a pack in the back of my pickup bed.

Hate boast, but I was very pleased to shoot groups like this using my loads!

It was three shot groups. The shot off the main group of the top target was the first round fired from the cold, clean rifle to see how the POI changed.

Attached is a picture of the rifle wearing the 2.5-8X36 VXIII scope on low mounts. Might seem a little silly to put a little scope on this rifle, but I really like the way it works out hunting with the low magnification option. Though it is a bit heavy (touch over 10lbs with the scope), this gun really settles down in the field to make accurate shots possible.

Between my rifle and Peak's, I think it just goes to show how good a 700 is out of the box to one that has been upgraded to a stock like the HS.

Sorry for the hijack, I just thought this would be a good comparison from really to good to great. With either rifle you are well served.
 
A little VXIII 2.5-8X36. What modifications does your rifle have? I really like the HS percision stock on mine, though I don't think I would have paid the $350-$400 to add it. I'm lucky I only paid $900 for this gun with all the little things already done to make it better.
 
Those are nice but 3 shot groups don't count. Do it with 5 and that is a real group. I can almost always get 3 shot groups under 1/2 an inch but 5 are usually .5+. It is a much better gage of rifle and shooter. Just saying.
 
nice 3 shots... and I have no issue with you stopping at three... my only suggestion is, if you decide to shoot 5 shot groups, go into it with the intention of shooting 8 shot groups... LOL...

There is nothing wrong with a 3 shot group to see what a gun is capable of, when you shoot 5, 8, 10, 12, 15, or 20 shot groups it is a measure of your concentration NOT a measure of the gun's capability...

A friend of mine has a Savage (10fp?) has shot, on more than one occasion, 20 shots into under an inch (with "fliers" measured) at 100yds. Is that any more of an indication of the gun and his ability to shoot than the 1/4 inch 5 shot groups and 1/5 inch 3 shot groups? IMO absolutely not! It is an indication of his patience and concentration and a damn good shooting gun.
 
Peak, my 700 ADL is bone stock. I bought it with the intent of getting an HS stock but I really can't justify it right now.
 
According to some of the information that Peak gave, his rifle is not an "out of the box" rifle. If it is a 24" heavy with "Mil Spec's" it could be a Remington 700-SS 5R, which is not out of the box...it's not even out of the factory...it's out of the custom shop. Sounds like he bought it from someone that did not know what they had...just a guess.
 
Rem 700s.........Good!

My R700 LTR .223 is box stock, and during load development, I stumbled apon a load it liked. 5 rds in the .3s, and 5 more in the .2s:) However, 5 more 5rd groups were anywhere from .6" to 1.2" Any modern rifle can be tuned to shoot 1hole groups, if you find the right load. Well....most anyways:D

What is a 700-SS 5R? The guy I bought it from was in the army and had the gun worked over by a gunsmith somewhere down south who was into working on "sniper rifles". All I know is the bolt was jeweled, trigger has been worked on, and the action is very smooth. The stock also attaches with two hex head screws, not sure if this is standard for the 700 or HS stocks or not.
On the other hand, who cares what I have, it's a shooter and a keeper!

Google the Remington 700 R5 Milspec. Its not a rifle they catalog. It uses the same barrels, trimmed down, as the Army M24 sniper rifles and have a 1in11.5 twist stainless barrel on a stainless action. Also comes in a really nice HS Precision stock.

From the looks of your rifle it looks like one, except for the stock. The ones I handled seemed to have a more pronounce vertical grip in the stock than your rifle. But that could just be the angle of the picture or I could be flat out wrong. LOL.

Either way you have a very nice stick there and have some good abilities as well.
