Hard to get guns, what do you have to do?

I've wanted a 1911 style pistol for a while. Many years I've looked at this and that and the other. Now I'm in a spot where I can go ahead and plunk down the money. I asked my lgs if they could order me a Colt Combat Commander, 1991 O4691 Model. They said sure but it's an allocated item so it might be a while. I was not familiar with what allocated meant at the time.

My lgs is an hour away, three weeks went by and while I was down there grocery shopping I went in there and inquired about my order. The answers were "Whenever Colt makes some more" and "A grocery store in Tennessee will probably get ten before we get one". Ok then. I'm in California if you didn't catch that one.

Another week goes by and I get curious. I email a guy at Colt and asked when their next production run of Combat Commanders was going to be. The guy at the store did say whenever Colt makes some more. The chap at Colt was very helpful and didn't answer my question straight away. He said "Ask your dealer what distributor they actually ordered this firearm from. Not asked about it or called and said hey when you get one… but actually put an order in. When I get that information I can tell you when we ship to that distributor and try and give you a better idea of a time frame. Then I’ll work our end to see if we can shake the tree and get one allocated for your dealer".

So I did. I talked to the guy that does all the special ordering at my lgs and he said that with my order he has placed the item on his "wish list". He went on to explain that this is a sort of "I'd like to have" list that involves five or six distributors. He also mentioned who his main "Colt guy" was but that doesn't matter here.

I replied back to Colt with that information and received the response "Please don’t take offense to this… The “wish list” will never get you a Colt gun." I laugh at that now, bit discouraged at first. I like customer service served straight up. He went on to say "We have back orders for 6 months to 2.5 years depending on the model. If the firearm is not actually ordered you will never have one allocated for you. Trust me on this. Unless a distributor puts your dealer in front of another customer who has actually already paid then you will not get that firearm. Unless your dealer is high on a distributors list?".

So after mulling this over it seems what I need to do to have the best chance of getting my hands on what I want is find a dealer that is willing to take all my money and actually turn around and spend that money by placing an order with a distributor. Preferably with one of the distributors most likely to be allocated these when they do ship out.

Am I on the right track? What's the best way to ensure yourself a hard to find gun, like this one.

The last link is for a New In Box commander, under $1000. Send them a money order, fax them your LSG's FFL info, and in a week or two you'll have a combat commander. The internet is a great tool for finding guns your LGS can't get in or rarely comes across. Warning: Online gun shopping is.....Addictive.

"Allocated" means that the distributors give priority / first dibs to the high-volume dealers. If your LGS is a small mom-n-pop shop or a kitchen table dealer, he'll get one well after everyone else.

Also, did you put down a deposit on the gun? Because most dealers won't even place the order without a deposit - we've been burned too many times by guys who change their mind, or whose wives have changed it for them.

If you must have it now, use one of the links above and use your LGS for the transfer.

Yes I did. I've never ordered anything online, bit hesitant but there's always a first time.

There are several brand new ones on gunbroker for less than $900. With shipping and transfer fee added in, you should easily be able to get one for less than $950.

You sound like my Dad. If th LGS told him they would order him one but didn't know when it would be available, he would simply think... I'm in line for the next one. Well, the guns go to distributors and then to the dealer and depending on what distributor you dealer uses, that can mean a big difference in time or you may never get one this way.

Buy from places mentioned above or try Buds in Lexington KY (internet). I would be looking for a nice clean 70 series one myself and that usually means gunbroker or similar site. Also these guns come up for sale on the forums. I would look at the Colt Forum in particular.

Buying is pretty much the same... you make your deal and the gun is shipped to a FFL of your choice (ask the dealer in advance about doing transfers and the cost) and when the gun arrives, the dealer transfers it to you after doing whatever background checks are required for your state, usually a NICs check and completing the Federal form.

Nah...didn't mean to come off that way. I did however figure that I would be in some sort of line. What I took from what the Colt representative said was that the wish list line I'm currently in will get me absolutely nothing.

I'll be exploring online more. I talked to a local guy who has an FFL and he told me more about the additional fees and such.

That was my first suspicion but putting your location in your details would have been another clue... ;)

Is a '91 model a 70 series or 80? 70 series are off roster. The only way to get a 70 series in California is through PPT or find an FFL that will do a Single Shot Exemption. Then you need to find a seller that will ship that "not unsafe" pistol to California. Most will not.

I scour the used/consignment cases.

I see that. I found two FFL dealers on gunsamerica that have a O4691, and another on Armslist.

It's a series 80.

Sorry. I'm not real up on Colts. :(

Shouldn't be hard to find online but that dreaded "No sales to California" line on the page can be... well...:banghead: Especially when the gun is actually on the roster.

One site wouldn't even sell me a sling for an SKS.:cuss:

I went through this in 2008. I just wanted to give LGS money and get a call when it arrived. Firearms were so hard to get he was unwilling to do it. I broke down and called Cabellas that was out of state. I figured they bought larger volumes and that might help. It took nine months but Cabellas came through and I got it and then they shipped to LGS (different than one than I initially approached) to get paperwork done. When all was said and done it cost me somewhere between 150 to 200$ more but i got it. Cabellas was very very helpful. I have the utmost respect for them and their awesome customer service.

Of course not. The "wish list" is basically just a memo pad within the distributor's online ordering system where the dealer can note what he's looking for. This is mostly for the dealer's convenience in monitoring availability of guns he's looking for. Maybe his rep peeks at it now and then if he has guns to move. But with a gun that is in high demand and short supply comes into stock at the distributor, reps hardly need to go hunting for a dealer who wants it. The rep will make the gun available to his best customers. How long a given dealer has had the gun on his wish list is unlikely to be a factor in his decision.

There is no line that you can get in to obtain a scarce gun, at least not within the manufacturer-distributor-dealer supply chain. It doesn't work that way. But, the lucky dealers who get these scare guns often sell them online through marketplaces like Gunbroker, albeit at premium prices. But that's supply and demand for you. So, if you want the gun and want it now, just search it up on Gunbroker and pay the price. You'll go right to the front of the line.

Yes I did.
It rather sounds to me like the LGS took your money, but did not actually order the gun for you? If I am understanding the situation correctly, I would polietly request a refund at my earliest convenience and take all my buisness elsewhere.
