Hardened/Hardish Steel to Make a Part

Even a blind squirrel.........

I finally saw a replacement hammer in the wild Saturday on Gunbroker. It was in a parts kit that was misidentified as a No. 3 Single Action in 44 S&W American. As hard as they are to come by, I figured the value of the hammer alone was north of $200. The parts kit came with a 4" barrel/cylinder, hammer, trigger, front and rear sear, main and trigger return spring, hand/hand spring, hammer pivot pin, Trigger/trigger guard, and all but one of the pins for the revolver. It did not come with a rear sear spring or its pin. And obviously not a frame.

Once I get it in my hands I may well map it and take @jmorris up on his generous offer. Here is a link to the completed auction. You need an account to see the completed auction. So there is a picture of the parts below:

One thing I don’t know is if the full cock notch will reliably hold. It will arrive before the weekend and I’ll know then. I’m not concerned about the half cock notch. It is there and will function one way or the other. Possible it has a problem, but I doubt it.

During the operation of trying to add the half cock notch I think I figured out why the previous owner removed it. If the previous half cock notch was unreliable and pushed off, it likely was more dangerous to have a half cock notch that could be pushed off than not having one at all.

It had me stumped why someone would remove it. I think I know why now.

Perhaps the previous owner was a bubba.

Bubba is always a possibility. Including some of what I was trying to do.

There were two mods done on this revolver. Removing the half cock notch could have been done anytime as the hammers are quite scarce even today. Availability to precision welding decades ago could have necessitated removal. In the thread titled
‘Tale Of a 44 DA’ I discussed the other mod. Apparently the hammer pivot broke at some point. The repair was to drill out what was left of the pivot pin, tap the hole and screw in a replacement pin. Because it was available from Jack First I just ordered a new one. But if I were the gun owner in the 1930’s there may not have been many choices. So it may be that when the repair was done and what was available impacts how it is repaired.

Getting worried about receiving the hammer. USPS texted the package was delivered yesterday but it wasn’t there. Submitted the appropriate notice to usps. But no response yet. I sure hope they didn’t lose it.

I don’t want this to turn into a USPS bashing thread, I’ve had very good luck using them. And their pricing is much better than the commercial carriers. This is a first and I suspect it happens with the other carriers.

Have you considered welding and filing stoning to create the half cock notch?

Just a thought: perhaps the local USPS, or the driver/postal carrier took an off day because of the heat.

With what I have learned after several attempts to re-weld and reshape, I probably could reshape the half cock notch. Hard part is the hammer suffers from push off. And I haven’t figured out how to re-weld and re-cut a notch so small.

As far as the heat goes, I was able to track down one of the carriers after I got home and found the package was missing. She was very nice and said she would talk to the other carrier on the route. My wife received a priority mail package that she also got the text For delivery. It was time stamped about two minutes earlier than mine. But mine was not in the box. Hers was actually in a second larger mailbox with a key. I figured there was some confusion on the two packages, and it probably spent the night in the mailbox someplace . Either in somebody else’s mailbox or another parcel locker. Still haven’t heard anything and I’m getting a bit nervous. I’m not likely to find another hammer anytime soon.

I did this entire post with voice, recognition, and my non-reading glasses. I apologize in advance for the typos.

And after all that the wife just sent a picture of the delivered package. So we’ll know in a few hours if the hammer in the parts kit is fully functional.

Hammer fit like a glove. Functions well. It can still be pushed off if I push hard enough. But I've had success adjusting that with more rear sear spring force. I'll end up repairing the original hammer at some point. And I'll do it right. I'll finish updating in the 'Tale of a 44 Double Action' thread. But I'm really digging the 4" barrel. Much nicer proportions.
