Harvested my first hand gun deer.

I had three goals going into this deer season,One with my shot gun,bp,and if the right shot presented itself one with my 1911.
It was tough hunting 30 mph winds and not much was moving saw nothing for two days,I was hunting heavy cover.
Tuesday am I spoted a small buck about 60 yds out and up wind of me decieded to give it a pass,untill it kept comming it stoped about 30 and browsed abit and walked right to me.
It stoped broadside to me at 15 yds unaware I was there inspite of the wind so I sliped the 45 out of the shoulder holster and calmed my breathing and took a neck shot.I figured If I made the shot it was down and if I missed no harm no foul.I made the shot but the deer managed to make it 60 yds before going down.
I Hit where I aimed, but in retrospect I will probabally
go with a heart lung shot next time.

Thanks, The bullets were 230 gr.XTP hand loaded to a bit over 900 fps.average on my chrony.
It was a rush,but I intend to stay away from neck shots in the future as I may indeed have been lucky it only went 60yds it was pretty well bled out by the time I got to it,But there is still that what if.

a common misconception. you have wisely decided to avoid the neck shot in the future. glad it worked for you the first and hopefully the last time.
I don't want to take anything away from your success. handgunning whitetails is a kick.

Congratulations! I've taken deer with a T/C Encore (admittedly NOT your run-of-the-mill handgun) and a Ruger SuperRedhawk. Since I already got one for the freezer this year during PA's early muzzleloader season, I'm hoping to take one during the regular season with the Redhawk that replaced the SuperRedhawk. Unfortunately, PA doesn't allow hunting with semi-autos, or I'd try that, too. Again, well done!

Congrats and I am happy it worked out with the little trailing that was needed.

My first one was a goof on me. I aimed right for the shoulder and in the instant the trigger broke she turned her head around to lick her side just as the bullet hit her right in the back of the jaw. The goof was the long shot at 73 steps, but I learned from it as well. She went down like a box of bricks, but had enough snap to kick and get up under some cedars. I waited and quietly slipped up on them and just as I started to look up under then she came floundering out. I put the finishing round through her broadside at about 5', and that was that.

I have since take a couple more with different handguns but I was way more conscious of what I was doing.

Nowadays I practice out to 100yds and with a couple of my bigger calibers I feel easily confident to minute of hog or yote. Deer on the other hand will have to easily be inside of 50 for me to drop another hammer on one.

I too am looking to get one with my .45 Colt Blackhawk this season. Our modern gun starts this Saturday, so I'll be giving it a whirl. Hope I join the club.

Congrats. I usually cheat and use a scoped .30-30 contender and call it "handgun hunting", though I have used my .357 magnum Blackhawk on a couple.
