I recently got together with my friend Harvey King and picked up the custom camp knife that I had ordered a few months back. Man is this knife worth the wait. I had told Harvey that I wanted a brute of a knife that could handle anything I could throw at it. This is what he came up with. D2 steel 5 5/8" blade length 1 1/4 depth and 5/32" thick. The handel is made from natural box elder burl with alot of red streaking. I had originally thought that the red color was from dye when the handle material was stabelized. In some cases it might be. This knife however is as nature made it. It features a brass insert in the lanyard hole. Three 3/16" rosette pins and black liners.

While I was visiting with Harvey he told me about winning the best Collaboration knife at the Denver knife show and winning the best overall value knife at the Ohio knife show. He also showed me a copy of a magazine called knives illustrated. I had not heard of the magazine before but was able to obtain a copy for myself at Cabelas this evening. The magazine has a couple nice article featuring Harvey and his work. The DEC/JAN issue pages 34,35,36,38,42,43. There is a picture on page 35 of him taking a order at the Topeka gun and knife show. I am 97% sure I am the guy on the other side of the table. The basket weave sheath sitting straight away from Harvey left with me. I was telling Harv and the gent beside him Don. About my bout with a garage door spring and how I used one of his knives to cut myself out of it. Anyway here are a couple pictures. I will try and take a couple more tomorrow in the light of day.

The more I think about it the more I am convienced that the order taken the magazine picture was me. Putting my deposit down for the knife pictured above.

Now's about the time some hamster-brain pipes up to tell you (and us) that hand-made, beautiful, high quality, functional works-of-art are snobbish, money-wasting nonsense. And that they skinned 137 deer (this season) without re-sharpening the Chicago Cutlery butcher knife that their cousin re-shaped with a file. Luckily, I AM NOT THAT HAMSTER-BRAIN. What a beautiful knife! Well done & congratulations!

Thank you.

My wife doesn't understand my love of nice knives. That is alright i can't understand why she has more than one purse. So it all works out.

The amazing thing is that the handle is not painted, dyed or anything like that. That peice of wood has been stabelized under pressure with a clear resin to protect its natural beauty. The multiple colors or reds and tans, blacks, all are from the burl from which it was cut from. A Box Elder which is considered a trash tree by most can produce amazing colors. Even plank wood from this tree with have red streaking but a burl produces the twist and turns in the grain.

Not bad from a peice of trash tree.
