Having recently taught my godson to shoot on my old 10/22, and then gifted it to him next time he is up in Alaska, I am now in the market for a new 10/22.

The problem is, I've been bitten by the customization bug. So I am wondering if anyone has built a 10/22 from the ground up? What all is needed for the build?

Step 1: barrel

Step 2: trigger

Step 3: the sky's the limit.

It is worth noting that as Ruger 10/22s improve, they contain fewer and fewer Ruger parts, until with diligent work and lots of money, one can construct an "Ultimate" Ruger 10/22 with no Ruger parts at all!

For more info on the subject than you could possibly want to read:

For a list of parts needed the Ruger 10/22 manual has all of them listed in there. You can download the manual from Ruger's website. But yeah for what parts to use you can search on rimfirecentral or on here for 10/22 parts opinions.

The problem is getting a reciever as thats where your serial number is and new recievers cost$$$$$. Why not try to find old ugly used all matel ruger to start with and go from there. I picked up a used one ,for my wifes rifle. payed a 125 bucks for it and stated with that. If your going to replace the complete trigger group then the new ones are ok for a custom to build your self. I see them back on sale around for 185 bucks again. Change thangs over time and you still have a shooter till its all done, if they ever are. Our to 10/22 are useing ruger recievers and bolts. My wifes shoots under 1/2" at 50 yards and mine a bit better than that on a good day.

for my daughter's 8th bday, i built her a 10/22 that contained no ruger parts at all. mostly volquartsen

worked out pretty well.

Like others have mentioned, the biggest problem is finding a receiver. There are a few companies that are making their own now, but they can be very expensive. It could possibly be worth it to find an all metal used 10/22 if you just want it for the receiver.

I didn't build mine up, but the only Ruger parts left in mine are the receiver and the bolt. A new receiver costs more than a new/used rifle.

I have had good luck with my Ruger receiver and bolt. Everything else is aftermarket and she shoots sub MOA.

By the time you really build up a 10/22 you'll have just about as much money in it as in a Volquartsen. I'd just get the Vol and have a great gun from the get go.

Yeah for a lazy person who just wants to shoot. For me building the gun is half the fun. And then when it shoots just as well as one of those "off the shelf VQs" it feels even better.

So, Cryo, go to the Pawn shops (actually call around first) you should be able to find one pretty cheap, but check Wally World First, cause some of the pawn shops want MORE than a new one.

Then order parts, personally I'd start em with a bolt.

For those who know where to look, there is no shortage of aftermarket receivers, bolts and trigger groups. This one was built with a Nodak/Spud receiver, which is flat-topped and configured for Marlin 336 scope bases. Or their proprietary rear sight. All CNC machined and hard anodized for $130/shipped. Only Ruger part on this one is the bolt, which has been accurized by Rimfire Technologies but there are aftermarket bolts available. Barrel from Clark, trigger from KIDD, stock from Boyd's, mounts by Warne, charging handle from Superior Concepts, front sight from Tech Sights/Marbles.

Receivers are available from:
MOA
Nodak/Spud
Tactical Innovations
Tactical Solutions
KIDD
Volquartsen

Trigger housings and/or complete trigger assemblies are available from:
KIDD
Volquartsen
Tactical Innovations
Jard

Bolts from:

If I were building another from scratch and did not want a KIDD trigger, I'd use a Nodak receiver, KIDD bolt and Tactical Inc. trigger housing with Power Custom innards.

Not really. I have about $900 in mine, which is a configuration you can't get from VQ.....or anywhere else for that matter. Plus it cost less to build than to buy a VQ. Build it yourself and use EXACTLY what you want.
