Has anyone made a bullet trap??

I'm thinking about making a bullet trap in my basement to test some handloads. I seem to remember reading somewhere that someone had used a large diameter PVC pipe, capped at one end and filled with sand. Would this work? Has anyone here made their own?

Sand will work great!

Don't know if I'd trust PVC to contain a bullet that hit sideways; kinda scary in my opinion.

I had a test fire tube in my old shop years ago that I made out of a 10' long piece of 10" steam pipe, with one end welded shut, and about 6' of sand. (4' of sand is plenty, I think.) I buried it at an angle out thru the basement wall. I had a baffle made from a garbage can filled with foam rubber on the live end. That silenced it pretty good.

I fired everything in there up to a .375 H&H, and never had a problem. Most bullets were stopped within a foot or two of sand if I remember correctly.

I built one once but it wasn't successful. Cheese didn't seem to work and I didn't know what else to use for bait.
