Has anyone ordered a Sig P6 from J&G Sales?

Considering buying a trade-in P6 from J&G. Looks like after fees (friendly dealer) I can get it for under $375. Long way from the ~$270 these things used to be, but whatever.

Main question: Is it worth paying the $20 for hand select? What I've heard so far seems to indicate no, since everyone says regardless you'll get an ugly P6. What's your experience been?

If you care what it looks like, I'd pay the hand select fee, otherwise you are likely to get the worst looking one in the current lot being shipped. If you only care about function, then I wouldn't bother with paying the fee.

I've always paid the fee at SOG and Century for C&R guns and have never been dissapointed.
 
Problem with the older Sig P6 is more than a few don't feed hollow points very well. Seems like there is a thread or two a week over at Sig Forum about this issue. Who wants a 9mm that don't feed hollow points reliably.

Many P6 need a new magazine spring and recoil spring right off the bat. They also use a stout hammer spring that does the trigger pull no good. I looked at one at a gun shop a month ago for $375 that look like it had been rolling around in the back of a pickup for months.
 
Right, I know what I'm getting into. I just love the feel of the old single-stack Sigs. Mainly gonna be a range gun with a carry option.

Just said to hell with it and bit the bullet today. One interesting factor that J&G doesn't advertise is that they have P6's with original white-dot sights for an extra $10. This means the guns were either made after the feed ramp was fixed, or they were at least overhauled fairly recently. So fingers crossed. And I went for the hand select just in case.
 
The date code on the P6 can tell you if it has the updated feed ramp. IIRC guns past 89 feed hollow points well. The P225 is one of the most underrated Sigs due to its non-hi cap nature.

There are a few things I do not like about the P6 version but they are a great value even at their current price.
 
I had two (just sold one, and the other is on consignment), one an early 80's gun, the other a late 90's gun.

The early gun had a lot of holster/finish wear, plain sights that had a weird number combo and were definitely regulated for a specific individual. The smiley on the barrel showed pretty heavy use.

The newer gun looked pretty much new, had the typical commercial SIG bar dot sights. The smiley on it was barely visable, and I dont think it was shot much at all.

Both had heavy DA triggers, and decent SA triggers. I replaced the mainspring on both with P225 mainsprings, which brought the DA trigger more in line with the commercial SIG's triggers.

I also replaced the sights on both with Meprolights.

Both my guns fed hollow points without issue, and I dont believe the older gun was ever modified, as from pics I've seen around of both the later modifications and the original, mine looked like the original. The later gun had the modification.

Check out Top Gun Supply for parts and mags, they can help you with spring upgrades, and they also have an armorers CD thats well wrth more than they charge. It will walk you through a complete tear down and reassembly of most P series guns, and has a specific section on changing out the mainspring.

Good luck on the hand select. Most places grab five guns and pick the best of them. They dont pick through a crate. Hopefully, you luck out. Either way, I dont think you'll be disappointed, mine were both good shooters.

I'll probably have a half dozen or so mags available here as soon as the other gun sells, if you twist my arm, I might could let them go. :)
 
Cool, thanks. I looked at a few early P6's in a local shop ($450+tax--no thanks) and the outsides were beat to hell (like a huge divot in the slide where a holster grommet rubbed) but the guts looked brand new. I get the feeling I'll want my $20 select fee back after seeing this thing, but given it'll be my only pistol I figure I'd try for a pretty one.

Hmm, mags you say? Certainly could use one or two.
 
Just checked, I have 7. 3 "P6" marked mags that came with the guns, and 4 P225 mags I bought new later.

When they first showed up, the P6's were all over the place condition wise, and everything seemed very random as to condition, or at least around here. I got mine at two different Gander Mountains here, and they usually had a half dozen or so to pick through. They'd get a batch that looked like hell, and the next week, there'd be one or two that looked new in the batch. Luck of the draw I guess.

My only regret now was, I didnt take two I saw that had Euro style "heel" mag releases that were basically, "as new/unissued". At the time, I thought why, but after thinking about it, I realized I probably made a mistake. I have yet to see, or hear of any others since. I'll just rack them up with the Japanese P230 in .32acp I missed for $400 a few years back becasue I didnt know what it really was when I first saw it. Of course it was gone the next day when I went back for it.
 
Bump. Especially curious if anyone else has experience with surplus P6s that came with dot sights.

$375 seems steep to me. I picked mine up back a few years ago when AIM had them for $265. It is a classic single stack pistol that was a bargin at less than $300otd.

I have seen beat up P226's in the $375 range. I own both (P6 and P226), and I would take a P226 over a P6 any day of the week. IMOO the best deal around in police trade in DA/SA 9mm are the S&W 5904's at Cole distributing for $248. Trade-in P6s these days go in the $350-400 range as far as I've seen. Wish I had gotten in on the ground floor.

I'm not a big fan of double-stack grips in general, plus in my state hi-cap mags are illegal unless they're pre-ban manufacture.

Don't get me wrong, I really like my P6, but for $375 they are a bit rough around the edges. I had to install a reduced power mainspring to get a decent DA trigger pull plus mine will not shoot conventional JHP's 100% of the time. When I occasionally carry my P6, it's loaded with Corbon pow-r-ball which function 100% reliable.

IMOHO, those two problems make the P6 and good deal for $300...but not $375. At that price point, I would be looking at S&W 3913/3914's or 908's. They are super reliable with all types of ammo and very accurate plus a few oz's lighter (~3oz) and a tiny but narrower and shorter (P6 7.1" OAL vs 908 6.8"OAL).
 
Nice folks, gun came in and I had the option to buy an extra factory mag. I did. Nice Gun, but it wouldn't feed hollow points and I already had the king of Single Stack 9MMs in my possession: the S&W 3913. So, I did one of the smartest things I ever did. I dumped all of my SIGS during the Great purge of 2009, I sold off my P6 and my 225 and haven't looked back.

No slam on J&G as they came through with flying colors. No slam on SIGs as these are the German models and not the overpriced Pieces of Crap that are being produced today.
 
I've ordered a milsurp pistol from J&G in the past and they were great to deal with. I called and asked about the hand select. The guy I talked to told me that the whole batch they had were top notch quality and that paying for a hand select would just be a waste of money. He saved me a few dollars and I appreciated that. The process was smooth with them. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another gun from them.
 
I purchased a German P6 from J&G about a year ago and have no issues at all. It was very clean and the bluing was in 95%+ condition. It is a shooter and feeds the HP's flawlessly. So far it's very reliable.
I'm thinking of buying another for my car as a perminant conceal carry option. For a glove box gun the price is pretty reasonable.. I'm going to look at Cole's too on the 5904.
 
My '84 model P6 has been 100% reliable. Likes lead FP147gr, 147gr HST, and 124gr Gold Dot...along with the usual slew of FMJs.

The new toy came in today. Cosmetics are fairly so-so. Slide wear seemed on the good side of average from what I've seen of others, but the frame and controls have heavy holster wear. The front corners of the trigger guard are even worn down.

On the plus side, the barrel finish looks almost new and the rails have hardly any wear at all. The only mechanical wear I can find is on the slide where the trigger bar safety runs and on the hammer where it rubs on the slide. Oh, and on the takedown pivot. I gather it was carried a lot, cycled and cleaned a lot, but not shot a lot.

MFG 9/82 (happy 28th birthday), has white dot sights that must have been added later. Original feed ramp. I tried some hollowpoints in the store and cycled through a mag slowly by hand with one jam. Got 300 rounds of Wolf FMJ so I'll worry about that later.

You got LUCKY with the sites! The '82 mfg date 'should' have a late model feed ramp, IIRC. Like I said, my 05/70 P6 feeds Remington JHPs with NO problems.
 
Nope, original feedramp. At least going by the photos online. Time to get some JHPs and experiment.
