Hello all, my buddy owns a Hatsan 12 gauge pump shotgun and he asked me about a Failure to Fire issue he had. He was using Federal slugs and the round failed to fire. My first thought was a bad primer/round (since the bird shot and buckshot he was shooting fired fine). But he said after he waited a minute, he ejected the round, inspected the primer (it had a very deep and noticeable primer strike) breach loaded it and pulled the trigger again, BANG, it fired fine. This occurred several times only with Federal slugs. I would've suggested just using different slugs however, our department issues Federal brand slugs as duty ammo and this poses a potential issue.

Do yall have any explanations or suggestions?

Thanks

Was this ammo from the dept? How old? Any one else had a problem with it? Has your friend had the gun long? How many shells through it? Was he shooting in very cold weather? The FP may be gummy and need cleaning. Just a couple misfires may be the box of ammo.

If everything worked fine but that ammo I think the issue is pretty clear, that ammo and that gun do not work well together. If the ammo works well in other guns, it sounds like the Hatsan has a softer firing pin fall. Titanium inertia type firing pins have encountered issues in the past, or it may be a weak hammer spring, or just dirt. Dirt problems are often sporadic.
I am not implying the gun has a titanium pin, I don't know.

This was my first thought; misfires from lighter-than-necessary primer strikes are a recurring cold-weather issue. Cleaning the bolt with a good degreaser is always my first recommendation.
