I haven't had much luck finding a holster or belt for my 3" Kimber 1911. I bought a Dutyman belt today. The problem I'm having is that I have a paddle holster and the gun keeps pulling down the belt and my pants. I want a nice tight fitting gun. Problem is if I tighten the belt any more the gun gets snug but the belt is so darn tight I can't even breath.

So what's the secret to a comfortable fitting belt with a tight, good fitting, snug gun?

Paddle holsters are designed in a manner to stick out from the body, you need a belt holster for a close to body fit.

Your body type will help someone help you find what works for you.
Im skinny so it helps. I am 5'10" 135 lbs. My waist is smaller than my hips, so I wear the belt loose enough to breath but tight enough so it wont slide down past my hips.

ps I carry a 5" 1911 in a Crossbreed Super Tuck

John, you've got a heavy gun there.

If you go IWB it should help, but short of suspenders, that hunk of railroad rail on your hip is going to be noticeable.

My belt supports a 5" steel 1911 without dragging anything down or being cinched tight...

Of course, it was made by the Beltman. :)

Also, lose the paddle and get a OWB/IWB holster that rides closer to the body.

Beltman 1.5" bull hide belt and CrossBreed Supertuck for a 3.5" all-steel 1911 here.
Almost as comfy as packing polymer, I can't imagine using a paddle holster for anything but perhaps toting a pistol on the range, I can't even guess at your belt's stiffness (too many on that company's site to take a guess) but I imagine a cheap belt and an injection-molded paddle holster aren't helping you carry what should be a very concealable gun, upgrade your gear, it will cost a tiny fraction of what that Kimber ran you.

I had BigJim at c5 Leather (Kansas City, KS) http://www.c5leather.com/ build me an IWB holster for my full-size 45 Auto, and while he was at it, I had him make me a belt to match. Then I got him to make me a single magazine carrier, and a double magazine carrier.

The holster fits the gun just like a glove -- every little part on the gun is imprinted inside the leather of the holster, and the same is true for the magazine carriers! If my body could do it, I could literally run, jump, do somersaults, etc. and the gun and mags would all stay in place! However, as soon as I draw the gun from the holster or the mags from the carriers, the belt is heavy enough and the holster snugly-fit enough into my waste that the gun and mags come right out with very little force needed and no movement at all of the holster or mag carriers!

I have found that part of the 'trick' is to have the components located in just the right position. Orientation of the gun so it can be quickly drawn - yet out of sight, hidden by a jacket, sweater, or even an un-tucked shirt and in the right place so you can comfortably sit without having to keep playing with everything. The way I have my IWB holster BigJim made is just behind my right hip (around 4 o'clock position). I find that right there is the best place for accessability as well as comfort! I can wear both the single and double magazine carriers, however, I typically end up just wearing either the SINGLE or the DOUBLE - as putting both on is not really necessary and I do run out of "room" on my belt. Not only do the three components have to fit on the belt, in a comfortable position and easily accessible from any position I may be in, but they also need to be in locations that work well when the belt is fed through all the pant belt loops!

I do need to keep the belt on the "tight" side in order to keep the gun where I want it and to prevent my pants from falling down!

The leather BigJim uses is crafted in such a way so everything (the belt, the IWB Holster for the full-size 45, the single and the double magazine carriers) is about 1/4" thick! That's right, 1/4" thick in almost every location! I was and still am, really impressed with this guy's workmanship!

He is out to about 3-5 weeks lead time, however, the quality of his work is excellent. If you have any problems specific to your own body and wearing his components, he is more than happy and willing to take it back and make it work for you! I sent two things back and he made them work for me, as I have a bit of a spare tire which was causing problems with the way two items ended up fitting me!

In other words, BigJim STANDS BEHIND HIS WORK, unlike a lot of people today!

Just a quick comment.

I recently bought a Don Hume 715 iwb thru Gunner's Alley.
Fits my SP 101 like a glove
nice looking
got here 2 days after I placed the order
good quality for the price
I love it

If I had it to do over...
I would choose an owb model because it feels like I am walking around with a gun and holster in my pants....go figure

Well, YOU DO have a gun and holster in your pants!
That's the whole idea!

John, he's giving ya Pearls..

If you are the type, or can pull off the look, belt and suspenders will let you wear your belt a little looser and still keep your britches from migrating toward your ankles. Not the ideal solution but it will let you get away with imperfect kit and maintain a modicum of decorum.

If you can get your gun and holster to stay where you want them at a comfortable tightness look at the Perry suspenders for a little extra support. They hook under your belt and keep your pants from going south on you.

Perry Suspenders

Not the perfect solution, but sometimes good enough is good enough.

A quick p.s. to my earlier post...
I got the the thumbsnap on my holster and have decided that was unecessary. The gun fits so well in the holster that I think it would stay put under almost any circumstances. The thumbsnap is also a pain when reholstering.

Sometimes a holster simply does not work out for an individual. Many of us can attest to having a box filled with such holsters. You may well buy several before you find the perfect one. At least your "box holsters" can be sold on EBay, Gunbroker or the classifieds here, for that matter.

511, Galco and others make renforced belts that help carry the load. I have a 511 that doesn't roll or sag without cincing it up like a saddle girth.
