Having a hard time with search... Homemade suppressors

I'm not talking about the kind that attach to end or barrels, I'm talking about a stationary structure. The ones I remember reading about are made from old tires arranged in a way to give the same effect as the baffles on a suppressor. I can't find any of the threads on this.

Has anyone built one of these things? If you did, did you find a better material than tires for the baffles?

I'm on a ranch with a large amound of "surplus" materials being waited to be snatched up to use on my rifle range which.

Also, would big tractor tires work better than smaller car tires?

Before folks start getting persnicketty, you might want to rephrase that question. Something like "Setting up noise-reducing baffle tunnel at my shooting range"

I just about garun-dang-tee you someone is going to not read your post, and instantly jump in accusing you of conspiring to build unlicensed silencers, etc.

I read your post, understand that you want a "noise abatement shooting tunnel" or whichever, and that's great. But the title of your thread is going to make folks freak out.

But your tire-tunnel idea is interesting, and I look forward to hearing the answers from our acoustic-engineer types once the legal types read your post and stop hyperventilating.

The idea is to use materials that either absorb or break up the sound waves. The more surface area you have, the more the sound waves get broken up. Tires will do it, but so will a wooden 'tunnel' lined with carpeting put on so it's 'wavy'. The 'wavy' part increases the surface area for the sound waves to hit and break up. Wavy carpets hung on concrete walls works too.
 
Whatever you decide on, just remember that a certain amount of unburned powder will be deposited in your sound-attenuating tunnel and will, at some point, pose a fire danger unless you are able to clean the tunnel and remove the powder periodically.
 
foam egg crate material in your tire tunnle should do a bang up job in attenuating noise.

Not to mention it will contain the gasses and lead dust, possibly causing a health risk. Sitting in front of it shooting hundreds of rounds might not be a good idea....maybe place a large industrial fan at your back or something.
 
Car Knocker makes an excellent point. If it is to be used outdoors, I would think that the tires would be a good starting point. Drill a hole in the bottom of each one; then they can be washed out every so often. I would expect that car tires would be better than tractor tires because the closer the passageway is in diameter to that of the bore or projectile, the better (less loss of pressure out the ends). For that matter, a 6 or 8 foot row of small tires (8" diameter hole, like from a wheelbarrow, etc.) might be ideal. I would want to mount it on a stand or hang it from a gantry-like rig so that I could easily adjust the height, angle and position. (It would be fairly heavy and would need to be supported to keep straight.)

Warning: All of this is non-scientific guessing. :)
