The problem occurs when using 2 3/4" shell 9,8,7 1/2 target loads with low brass, excuse me steel, or aluminum, what ever is used, in my 26" super magnum barrel. I have never used high brass, magnum, or super magnum shells or heavy loads. The problem I am running into is that after firing, shells get stuck in the breech, either with the extractor attached forcing me to bounce the butt off the deck while holding the forearm, or the extractor will "let go" of the shell forcing me to use my leatherman to removevthe spent shell. This has been going on since I have owned the gun, and oiling the breech with remoil helps until the oil burns off, a dozen or so many rounds. Any thoughts, suggestions, or solutions?

Sorry about the long post.

Thanks, I will try polishing, I have 200 universals left. After they're gone ill switch to something else.

I prefer to hone a rough chamber as it is much more likely to remove ridges than just burnishing with steel wool. Or call Remington, they will usually take care of it IF you haven't screwed something up home gunsmithing.

Its a common 870 problem. I dealt with it for a while (its quite embarrassing trying to shoot doubles on the skeet field). My local gunsmith at the time offered to fix it for $35 (maybe even $25, its been awhile). I was fed up enough that I jumped on it - not sure exactly what he did - probably some combination of polish and hone as others have described above - but it worked much more reliably with cheap (read: low-brass) loads afterwards.

I have never had a universal function properly in any of my 870's, ever! I polished one of my 870's and it handled them better, but still not consistent reliable function. AA's however, or any other brand, function flawlessly.
And also, make sure you are completely bringing the action rearward, and with authority every time. This would especially be a problem I would think when using short shells in a 3" or 3-1/2" chamber / extraction port.
