I recently bought a "Hawk Industries" shotgun from CDNN and except for the markings is *identical* to my Norinco 982 (Big 5 is even advertising it as the "Hawk 982"). What with the Norinco import ban I'm wondering if this is Norinco's way of circumventing the import ban?

"this is Norinco's way of circumventing the import ban?"

No, actually it's Norinco's way of offering different distributors the same gun with a different brand name on it.

Some of the very first Norinco guns sold were advertised with the Hawk name, other's with the Interstate name.

This isn't any different than Sears, Wards, Western Auto, and Gambles all selling the same Mossberg guns with their names stamped on them.

The Clinton Executive order that banned the import of Chinese ammo and cheap SKS rifles did not apply to shotguns. This is why they can import Winchester 97 copies, Ithaca 37 and Rem. 870 copies. I hear that they may be offering a copy of the Winchester 1887 Lever Action/ "Terminator" shotgun before long.
