Hawkeye Ruger M77s, anyone handled one yet?

A bump, for your thread.
I have my eye on a M77 Hawkeye .308 in stainless synthetic.
Internet warehouses are now getting them. I have seen several on gunbroker. I have not seen any, at my local dealer's yet.
You can see some firsthand reports, about the Hawkeye on netrifle. These reports, have been very favorable.

I looked at the blued/wood version yesterday. Balance was nice, the cosmetic updates were useful (matte finish on all metal surfaces), the recoil pad actually looked like it might absorb some recoil, the furniture was very tasty in general - almost Kimber quality wood and finish - and the wrap around checkering was well done and felt great (even though it won't last long on the bench or in the field). The trigger was OK; not super light but fairly crisp. My biggest nit would be Ruger's continuing insistence on using barrel lengths that are inappropriate for their chambering - why anyone would think that a 270 and a 7mm-08, for example, should both come with a 22" tube is beyond me...

All in all, a very nice package that I'm guessing is designed to be the Ruger version of the CDL or the like.

Dang - didn't really pay attention. If I had to guess, I'd say that it was 13.5", only because it didn't stand out at me one way or another (and it seems that most rifles these days are made with a 13.5" LOP).

Since I can square up pretty well with a 13.5" LOP and really need a 14.5" to blade off properly (36" inseam and arms to match, on a 71" frame), it's just not something that I really pay much attention to.. Sorry.

I'll be gettin' back there end of next week. If I remember (or if you remind me), I'll measure it for ya.

I like them short to I can manipulate the weapon quickly. I'm taller with longer arms but I like a 12.25" LOP. Like Tim Wickertt sez, buy a gun and start sawing off at both ends.:D Although, yeah, if I was going to buy a .270 I want a long tube since it's performance is based on it being necked down and quick.

Even if the Hawkeye is not set up properly, I look forward to considering it. Good to see new things from the gun companies, now if they just built weapons for shooters I'd be set!

It's just tough finding stuff on the shelves up here in a medium sized city as the dealers either sell guns quickly, do not cater to shooters or do not tie money in overhead, especially rifles here since most hunting is done with shotguns and muzzleloaders. Another great thing about Texas, the stocking dealers are not afraid of inventory!:D

Hmmm, I have been "shopping" for a controlled feed/Mauser type rifle in .308 and so far thinking CZ-550. Now you have me thinking some more as I had not seen these. Gotta see if I can find one to handle around here.

Now, why is Ruger being so dad-burned mum about that new trigger? I was just looking at some Ruger Firearms magazine at the book-n-brew, and even that publication wouldnt' give me any info. Could it be they're not sure if the trigger will be better or worse?

In feel, I think that it's better. It's still 3.5-4lb or thereabouts, but it's pretty crisp.

I just can't tell you HOW it's different since we didn't pull the action out of the stock when I looked at it (and the rifle is long since sold).

Fella's;

I handled the new Hawkeye in a Scheel's in Great Falls Montana. It was in .257 Roberts. The configuration of the bolt handle is slightly different, the stock has improved as far as I'm concerned, but I wasn't making a critical evaluation of it at the time, sorry.

I wasn't as much interested in it as just curious. Why? Because it had that persistant quality control problem common to 90% of the offerings on the racks. They put the bolt on the wrong side. Which means it really was of little interest to me.

I did, however, take a hard look at the new LHB Tikka they had.

I regret to inform you that I have shot one and that my savage outshot it:D

It was a .270 sporter barrel I estimate LOP about 13.7in or something like that. When zeroing the leapold the best group I got at 25yds was about 1 inch. I was using bags so it wasnt me. Moved out to about 100yds and my friend who I was zeroing the rifle for was saying "mine will shoot better than yours mine cost so much more" The best he could get off the bags was about 5in group. I got it down to 3in. But my savage got it down to one hole:evil:

The overal finish is better and the trigger is better than most rugers as to date. I would say its good for hunting but not much else. Btw the zeroing was done after the barrel breakin. The recoil wasnt that much more than my .308 but it was more the pad that they have on the stock is definantly better than the one on my savage.

Thanks for the feedback. Sounds as if it's minute of deer, which is really all ya need anyway.
