HBO's "Taking Chance"

HBO's "Taking Chance", based on true events, chronicles Marine Lt. Col. Mike Stroble's journey as the official escort for Pfc. Chance Phelps, who was killed in combat in Iraq, to his family in Wyoming. This is a movie that will move you no matter your stance on the war in Iraq.

The film shows you the dignity, respect and honor shown to our fallen warriors as they make their final journey home. I was touched by the emotion and respectful tone of this movie as a Marine and an American. I highly recommend it. Do not miss it if given the oppotunity.

i saw the movie Sat night. It really brings home the sacrifice our soldiers make for us. Thanks to all of you for your service. You're in my thoughts and prayers daily.

This story has ties with western Co. I am glad to see a respectful depiction of the funeral process for our servicemen. The press was critical of the past admin. for not having unfetered access to the dead warriors as they were returned to Dover. I think their only purpose would have been to exploit the dead. This film from what I have heard was very well done and pays honor to both the dead and their escorts.
As the parent of a combat arms soldier I am greatful should the worst happen that there are men like Col. Stroble.

Someone will soon be along here to say this has no place in the forum, I would say that there is no place that we shouldn't honor the men that sacrifice so much in the defence of their country. They do not pick the time nor the place and serve voluntarily.

The HBO website has a section devoted to the movie with schecule info. as well as some interesting production info and links to the Chance Phelps Foundation.

Guys, here is a word document with the writing of Col. Strobl, from which he wrote the screenplay. There are some differences between it and the movie, which I don't necessary agree with. I think that it would have been better telling the story, truthfully and not changing it for better TV.

Pet peeves:

He was shooting a M2 .50 BMG, not a M 240 when he was killed. (But this could not be as dramatic as him holding down the trigger dead.)

The man escorting his brother home, was an Air Force Captain, not an Army Sergent, and they met at the Dover facility.

The event at the VFW hall was after the funeral, and they renamed and christened the large room in honor of PFC Phelps. Why did they not include that?

Sister and fiance were not in the room when the personal effects were given to the family.

The sister was assigned to the Chief of Naval Intelligence, a Rear Admiral at the Pentagon, he and a number of his staff attended, they did not mention that.

He did not spend the night in the airport baggage handling area, he was driven to a hotel by one of the men he met there. A reserve marine officer, the supervisor, picked him up the next morning and brought him back to the airport.

Col Strobl was notified before he arrived at Dover of the proper site for the burial, not at the last minute as they presented in the movie.

Read the document, and you are sure to find some more omissions that would have made this powerful story even better.


Good Movie, would not want anyone to miss it.

I have it on the DVR. When I finally get a day off work I will have to watch it. The trailer looked awesome. These stories need to be told, especially now when more people are concerned about the economy and Obama.

Another thing the writers embellished was the long procession of cars/truck going up the mountain pass. The procession was actually at the time of the funeral.

Even with all of the embellishments, it was an outstanding movie and it really drives the point home.

a great movie, that depicts the dedication of honor. service, and
comittment. I would highly recommend it for viewing, as it touches
the heart and soul of all true Americans.
