Thanks for the input so far everyone. I recently picked up a new M&P 9mm and it came with the stock sites. I pulled it out of the safe last night, in very low level lighting environment, and could barely see the front site. Not so good in my opinion. Can't imagine having much luck at o'dark-thirty and don't want to rely solely on "point and shoot" method.

No way, I just like to use tracers and walk my fire in. The muzzle flash lights up the target for easy identification as well.
:neener: Just kidding, yep, night sights and a bright flashlight. I didn't really think they were necessary until I tried using my non-night sights in a dimly lit room and outside at dusk. They were just one solid black bar sitting on top of the slide with several feet (at the target distance) leeway one side or the other until you see a gap from the front being off kilter.

I can see no reason not to have them. They don't take any extra space, they don't really weigh more, and they work fine in daylight too. As far as my stinky opinion goes they are a must have.

Since I'm at home more often at night than any other place the chance of needing night sights for low light conditions is higher at home than any where else.

the sights will be backlit by the light of a weapon light, in the worse case scenario that you don't have night sights. fighting at night without night sights is easy to do, most people think that they are at a disadvantage without night sights, but trained properly, they will be able to engage and destroy targets in low/ no light conditions without them.

I do like night sights on my defensive handguns, but more as a "nice but not absolutely necessary" feature. In this case, if your "perimeter defense" worked properly, you have some warning and the intruder has not already gotten the drop on you, chances are you will have time to retrieve your handgun and a flashlight. I think you will find that if you hold a reasonably bright flashlight up next to the handgun, the sights will be lit by the "backwash" from the beam.

Night sights are a good idea. If I change sights I would most likely add a FRONT night sight.

But, a whole lot of people been shot at night using a flashlight.

Point shooting at close range is a vaulable skill. And by skill I mean you learn how and then practice it.

But night sights are nice.

My CZ 75 has night sights. I often keep it handy in the bedroom and I'm amazed at how bright they are when your eyes are dark adjusted. I could find it 20' away in the dark.

I have a light mounted on my HD gun- but no nite sites. I have experimented quite a bit with shooting in dimly lit conditions- everything from dusk to moonlight to full darkness. It has been my experience that I can see the big white (non- radioactive) dot on the front of my GLOCK whenever it is light enough to verify my target. If I can't verify my target, I don't shoot. Thankfully, I don't live or carry in a free fire zone, so I have to know what I'm shooting at. The 3 Watt LED light on the gun negates the Tritium glow anyway.

That being said, I do have some guns with nite sites- but I won't pay extra to get them.

Uhhh, laser grips do not trump night sights. I've got two sets of CTCs on two guns, but have night sights as well. Trusting your life on battery operated electronics, that a thumb or even a little debris can block isn't going to lead to the best results. CTCs, night sights, and a surefire would do a lot better then anyone of three individually.
Really tough to make a choice on which is most neccessary....Flashlights can give away position (or make an easy target) and batteries could fail, CTCs batteries could fail or sights could be obstructed, and night sights only help when you can already see what your looking at i.e. low light situations, not complete darkness (but don't worry about them being drowned out by a weapon a light, they're still sights, better w/them then w/o them). Yeah...get all three...
