"Hi all,
Sorry I've been silent, but I was helping the kid get ready for her
move to London for six months. Stef may stay longer if she's
accepted into Central Saint Martins for Graphic Design.
We're planning how to address SB24 and SB25. Some of you have been emailing me with suggestions, [email protected]. I can confess that mine are perverse but, at least, it allows me maintain a sense of humor.
Also, MMM will have a booth at Cinqo de Mayo on the first weekend of May. We'll have our usual info and a messy kid's activity. Anybody speak Spanish?
Do you have any friends or family in Iowa? (Tell them about MMM and also about our state government and the recent laws it passed because of our politicians' close ties with the Gun Lobby. Betcha they won't want the same thing to happen to Iowa and will be less inclined to visit you.) MMM is looking to help build the gun violence prevention in Iowa! Please email John Shanks [email protected] with any contacts you have there.

The gun industry has long known that its practices aid criminal
access to guns--yet continues to do nothing about it. Just last
month, a former gun industry insider and high-ranking NRA official
blew the lid off the gun industry's code of silence.
SENATE IMMUNITY BILL INTRODUCED WITH 52 CO-SPONSORS
Former NRA board member Senator Larry Craig (R-ID) and Senator Max Baucus (D-MT) have introduced S. 659, which will take away the legal rights of gun violence victims and give sweeping legal immunity to the gun industry.
The bill was introduced with 52 co-sponsors. This is a majority of
Senators, which means we would likely lose any vote on the bill. We must block the bill with a filibuster and then must be in a position to sustain the filibuster, which will require 41 votes for our side. We must immediately communicate to all Senators that we oppose this bill and want them to support a filibuster of it.
ACTION STEP:
PLEASE CALL OR WRITE YOUR SENATORS TODAY.
URGE THEM TO:
1) Oppose S. 659 and
2) Support a filibuster of the bill.
Contact your Senators by clicking here:
http://www.millionmommarch.org.
Or, you can call them via the Capitol Switchboard at: 202-224-3121.
Also, ask your Senators what their current stance on the bill is and tell us what you hear at [email protected]. In your message, tell us the Senator's name, state, and what they told you about their stance on S. 659.
BOTH of our Senators are co-sponsors.
We must stop this legislation or gun violence victims will have the
court door slammed shut. Victims like the families who lost loved
ones in the Washington, DC area sniper attacks, and the two New Jersey police officers, Ken McGuire and David Lemongello, who are seeking to hold a negligent West Virginia pawnshop responsible for its role in fueling the illegal gun market in New Jersey.

News from National:
This year, we have begun a focused efforts at understanding and
addressing the connections between domestic violence and firearms. Firearms present a serious threat to the safety and welfare of battered women and their children. Perpetrators of domestic violence use firearms to intimidate and threaten their intimate partners and sadly, also to maim and kill them. They are the most common weapons used by males to murder females
In recent years, prompted by Domestic Violence organizations, state legislatures have passed legislation that allows tighter constraints to be imposed on barterer who are charged or convicted of domestic violence-related offenses, and abusers who are subject to protection orders. This legislative activity reflects the growing understanding that abusers should be dispossessed of and prohibited from acquiring firearms.
In 2003 several states have introduced legislation to address the risk of violence posed by firearms in the possession of barterer.
*STATEMENT FROM MARY LEIGH BLEK ON BUILDING
At the BC/MMM Board meeting at the end of January, our Board of
Director set us on a path to reach three key objectives this year: 1) build grassroots support and recruit new members,
2) defeat the gun industry immunity bill and obtain favorable judgments in the California city lawsuits, and
3) raise money in addition to the current budget to support future mobilization efforts.
I am confident that our chapters can meet the first objective as we know grassroots! Please share your ideas with us and let the staff know how we can support your efforts to swell the ranks of your chapters, state councils, and the movement in general. Please continue to share your ideas, too, on the Bulletin Board. As we also know, the public supports our efforts, but they're not (yet) signed up for the MMM E-NEWS! Many chapters are offering a limited time offer of free membership dues. If each chapter member can find 5 new members to belong to its chapter and if each chapter signs up all its members to the MMM E-News, Boom! we're at least five times stronger.
Thanks you for all your great work in the field. I appreciate that
we are operating in difficult times for our country, but we will
build and grow and meet this path set by our Board. We know it's what will make the difference come 2004 and most importantly, save lives."
