I'll be picking up a mossberg 590 for a HD gun in the next day or so, and wondered if anyone had any comments on ATI's steel heatshield with ghost ring sights. At HD distances are ghost rings a significant improvement in speed of target acquisition and/or accuracy over just a plain front bead? Also, does anyone have any experiance with this or something similar (or even heard any reviews/comment on them)?:

Just wondering if these are easy to install, fit securely, etc. (I.E.does it rattle around or fit snug? Will the sights remain true, or do they tend to get out of alingnment from the heat shield sliding/turning under recoil?)

I apreciate any info you all can give on this

I bought one for a Remington 870. I attempted an install but it never seemed to fit right. It sits in a box somewhere in my closet now.

In order for a ghost ring to be really useful it's better to have the rear sight mounted on the receiver relatively close to the eye. I don't think you'll get enough benefit from having the aperture mounted out on the barrel to be useful, I don't know as I have never handled a gun equipped with this particular accessory. I do like ghost rings on defensive shotguns, a lot.

I am not a particular fan of heat shields on shotguns, about all they do IMO is add weight and prevent easily cleaning the outside of the barrel. In a recent shotgun class, one of my classmates had a heatshield on his gun- it backed down the barrel enough under recoil that, in combination with a loose magazine cap, it forced the barrel out of the receiver enough to prevent the gun from locking the action closed. This BTW was a relatively new Mossberg and the heatshield was installed at the factory.

I'll not spend any money on _anything_ ATI makes, I've heard too many stories from dissatisfied buyers. But that's just me, YMMV.

Mossberg offers defensive shotguns with factory ghost rings already mounted- why not just get one of those, if you're buying new?

Stay safe,
