Specifically, I was looking at the combination of top folding stock with the ghost ring and the heat shield with the front sight moded into it. I've been concerned that the heat shield might not fit tightly enough to provide a reliable sight picture for slugs.

Anyone have any experience with the ATI ghost ring heat shield set up for the Mossberg 500/Maverick 88?

That's kind of what I thought from the pics.
I might just get the 20" ribbed bbl and add some fiber optic sights.
Then I will have the choke tube options to go with it.

Sounds like a better plan.

Are you considering the ATI top-folder? If so, I wouldn't go with it. I haven't heard anything good about it.

I have an American Rifleman issue where they describe the Mossberg "Tactical Turkey" gun, and it sounds like an almost perfect HD/SHTF set up. They mentioned that the telescoping stock on that gun was made by ATI. I checked the ATI website and saw the ghost ring heat shield, so I thought I would post my question and see what kind of feedback I got before I bought one.

I would buy the Tactical Turkey, but I really don't want to pay for the fancy camo finish. I have a field model Maverick 88 with a 27" bbl, and I am looking for a way to get the Tactical Turkey set up on the cheap.

I installed a Mossberg heat shield on my 590 with ghost rings. If you take your time you can do it. I used some electrical tape on the barrel so as not to scratch it. You can spred the tangs on the heat shield far enough apart to push in onto the barrel. The electrical tape does a nice job of keeping the barrel from getting scratched up. I don't have any pictures yet, but it looks great and the sight picture is not effected in any way.
