I'm in the market for a new heavy barreled varmint type bolt action rifle in
223.
I want it for a fun benchrest gun for my reloads.

What make rifle is the best value on the market today for such? Thanks.....

$900 tops, under $700 would be much more to my liking. Just 55gr bullets is what I'll be shooting, so a fast twist is not needed.

Following. I've been waffling myself on a rig in that exact range that will be enough to smack yotes, groundhogs, pdogs and paper out to about 300 yards. Heavy enough to take a few shots without heating up too bad, light enough to carry for a brief time.

My top 3 right now have been the mossberg MVP, savage 25 with the laminate stock, and CZ452.

bluetoper: I have 3 bolt action HD barreled 223 Varmint rifles, that shoot extremely well, 3/4 of an inch or less, at a 100yds. And I bought all three of them used.
1. A Remington 700 HD in 223
2. A Savage 110 HD in 223
3. A CZ 527 Varminter HD in 223

I bought all three of them from $ 300.00 to 450.00 a piece including rings , mounts, and scopes. Check the Pawn Shops, LGS, Estate Sales, Want adds in the paper. You might be surprised just what you can find, if you can handle buying ((( USED ))). But if you have to have a new rifle, I would expect the Savage would be the cheapest. And every one of the Savage Bolt Guns my Son and I have are first class shooters and we have never had any type of problems with any of them.

No guns in estate sales around here. Families gather them up before hand. And used 223 bolt actions you find at pawn/gun shops are priced in my locale what a new one cost.

It also depends on how much you want to mod the rifle such as changing stocks (bench rest stock, etc.) Savage rifles shoot good out of the box and have plenty of aftermarket support. There are plenty of aftermarket stuff for the Remington rifles too. Th CZ rifles have a good reputation. Personally, I stick with Savage since they have a good selection of left hand rifles. I've never had a Savage that did not shoot well.

I'd go Savage as well. Had my Savage 10 .223 to the range yesterday, 1" at 200 yards with 68 grain Black Hills, that's good for me :)

Savage model 12 BVSS. Paid $900 for this one. 0.5 MOA out of the box. Fluted SS barrel, 3 position safety and the best trigger out of any rifle I own.

I got a Savage 110FP for $500 that is a better shot then I am. There are plenty of rifles out there that will do exactly what he is looking to do.
