I'm going to buy a varmint rifle for general shooting/varminting/ and reside in Norcal. I'm leaning to a 22-250 with a .223 as backup. I currently own a 30.06 Abolt and it is a tack driver at 100yds. I've never owned a Remington and am leaning towards a heavy barrel rifle from them. Let me know your thoughts on these two manufacturers rifles in these calibers. I want a bolt action heavy barreled rifle. Thanks, RB :confused::confused:

I have a Remington 700 LVSF (Light Varmit Stainless Fluted). Without scope is 6 3/8 lbs. Mine is chambered 7mm-08, but that is a limited production in that caliber. The LVSF is a great shooter and is light enough for all-day carrying if the need were there. There are many other lighter rifles out there when I was looking for a rifle last year, but anything lighter than this rifle felt like a toy, and I know I wouldn't be able to shoot it with any wind.

I don't have any rifle experience with Brownings, but in my opinion, Browning makes the best shotguns. I'm sure that the Browning rifles are great guns too, but I'm a Remington rifle/Browning shotgun person.

If I were shopping for a new centerfire varmint rifle I'd be looking at Savage pretty hard, though a decent 700 can be had secondhand.

Remington.......Both are great choices, but I give the nod to the big green in this case. I own both A-Bolts and 700's and like them each for various reasons, but for varmint shooting I like the 700 the best. Varmint hunting is a sport where there are all kinds of accessories and after market goodies that make a "rig" more specialized for it's intended purpose. There are far more available accessories (triggers, bolt handles, stocks, etc) for the 700 than there are for the A-Bolt.

All five of the heavy barrel 700s I have bought have delivered outstanding accuracy. The two I have now - a 700LTR and 700SPS (installed in a HS Stock) have been excellent shooters. The LTR being the most accurate factory rifle I have ever fired. The SPS is fairly new but the groups have really impressed me. Both are .223s.

Something to consider is that the barrels in current Browning rifles in 22-250 or 223wssm are chrome lined thus offering superior barrel life.
