Hi!

I realized something the other day - I am more careful and safety conscious due to my involvement with firearms. And I can say that because I haven't really been a gun person all that long, 2 years at the most, and I can remember my attitude towards possible dangerous situations and how it was different from what it is now.

For instance, I am now much more attuned to the possible danger when one of my younger brothers or sisters is doing something stupid like swinging the croquet mallet wildly around for no good reason. I am more alert when driving and I always keep my eye on that guy pulling up to the stop sign on my right, just to make sure he is stopping and isn't going to plow in front of me.

Has anyone else noticed a similar phenomenon?

The thing that made me think about it was when I was helping a friend put up a pole shed last Saturday and I noticed that I automatically kept my finger off of the trigger on the circular saw until I was ready to make the cut. :)

Heightened sense of awareness perhaps?

Just having guns doesn't make me feel any safer. If you have to draw it, you really aren't safe are you?

I haven't noticed being anymore generally safety conscious, but I think that gun owners might be more aware of unsafe areas/conditions. There seem to be people who are forever getting into some kind of difficulty with law enforcement or other civilians which might have been easily avoided with a little awareness.

Perhaps you are growing up...and finally realizing that you're not immortal? There all kinds of things around you every day that can hurt or even kill you.

I have not become more sensible or courteous while I drive, I just hang back and let them take each other out.

Perhaps, but that's not quite what I was referring to. Shooting is an activity that requires a HUGE amount of "safety first." It's perhaps the one activity that I am involved in that puts such a large emphasis on doing things a certain way to keep accidents from happening. Now I'm finding that this way of looking at an activity and looking for potential danger points (just generally steering wide of anything that could possibly lead to an accident) is sort of being automatically applied to the rest of my life, not just shooting.

Sure, you bet. When you are constantly cognizant of safety, like anything else, it bleeds over into the other areas of your brain. You drill yourself to always be aware of safety hazards in order to prevent a tragic accident. Your drilling is paying off, albeit in an unexpected fashion.

Look at the bright side, your heightened sense of maturity officially entitles you to flirt with older women.

Yay! Now if you could give me a tip on how to tell which ones are also into guns... ;)

I have a CCW and I also ride motorcycles. I have to be very aware. Everybody should be, regardless of their activities in life, but these two things definitely force you to get with it.
