Someone really needs to tell the nice folks in Washington that they've spent enough money, and that fighting to implement an oppressive, and probably racist, licensing system is not going to win them votes.

I wonder who the good people of DC, Chicago and NY will vote for in the next local and federal election?? I think the voting will tell us whether the people of those repressed cities really care about their individual rights or would rather be catered to by the politicians regardless of todays outcome.

The 2A was spelled out, now will the people take on the responsibility of self defense or continue to dial 911 and hope for the best..

How cool is it that I called my local gunshop and heard the same news channel as I was on and "a crowd" of customers hootin' and hollerin'!

It's like Christmas!

A person who is not in the militia may own handguns and other arms for self defense...

Are Machine guns and other weapons protected for those in the militia?

Chief Lanier

Typical nonsense from an unelected official. BTW, on what grounds do you plan on prohibiting semi-automatics, Chief ? I believe your gun possession laws were just struck down.

While I'm happy we still have 5 SCOTUS judges with common sense. It's very scary we have 4 who will throw our constitution under the bus. I somehow can't get very excited over this decision.

about 6 months ago I was reading on the aclu's web site they don't support gun right 'cus the scotus has never 'rulled ' that it is an individual rite. this mean they have to eat crow and support the second amendment?

I just wanted to get in my contrats albeit a little late...

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY EVERYONE! June 26th, the day the SCOTUS set us free from the Brady Bunch.

Ready2Defend: So how soon can the citizens of DC begin to exercise their rights? If the law is overturned it ought to be immediately.

Mayor Fenty seems to still think it will be in effect for another 21 days until his police can make up something.

I was also thinking, since the whole ban was deemed unconstitutional does that mean the citizens can sue D.C. now? Say if they had a family member who was slain in their home and under the ban he was defenseless. Can they now sue for reparations or something? I'm sure in the 32 years that the ban was around it happened on numerous occasions.

You know its kind of sad.

I work in what would be considered a Pro Gun shop by my standards.

Yet even after explaining the ruling and why its good, most every one just shakes their head and says "great".

In fact only one other co worker was happy like me, and he mostly just bow hunts (doesn't own anything more than a BP muzzle loader.)

Considering almost every one in this shop owns guns, what the heck?:scrutiny:

Sure hope so. They already do, to some extent, in some states, IIRC. It's just not national policy for 'em.

It's not the best decision, but it's a step in the right direction: The Supreme Court of the United States has finally struck down a ban on firearms as unconstitutional. They have affirmed that the RtK&BA is an individual right.
That's something to celebrate about.

Sure, they don't trust you with FA yet, or to carry anywhere you please. That's what we've got congressmen and state legislators for.

You don't often have victories without some casualties. This victory has determined a few very useful things - 'legal purposes' includes self defense, not just hunting. The 2nd is an individual right, not relegated to the Nat'l Guard, police, reserves, or whoever else.
Anyone argue with an anti, and have them mention one of those two items?
Now you've got a recent SCOTUS decision on the issue to reply with. Original intent doesn't always work for the "living document" folks.

I'm in D.C. today

... travelling on business.

MAN, are most of the evening newscasters looking sad.

However, WUSA9 has an on-line poll (at wusa9-dot-com) asking if people agree with the SCOTUS ruling, and the numbers are 92 to 8 "YES". Even they say, "You can't ignore numbers like that."

They are also soliciting comments for inclusion on their 7:00 ET news (that's just under 2 hours from now). Email mailbag @ wusa9 dot com

LET FREEDOM RING! :D:D

Well, I asked God to please get the word individual in there somewhere... AND THERE IT IS!

I was expecting a narrower ruling than this; the definition of "traditionally lawful purposes" is going to be the next big argument for sure.

1. The fact that it was 5-4 even for such a narrow pro-gun ruling explains why the NRA and many other organizations have been reluctant to pursue lawsuits. And this is the best Supreme Court for our purposes we have had for a long time and the best we are likely to have. Bear in mind Republicans have been in the White House for 20 out of the last 28 years, and yet we still have four justices willing to uphold an absolute ban on handguns.

2. Having read the full opinion of the court and the two dissents, I can summarize them this way:

Scalia: individual right, the purpose of which is to make sure we are well armed for our militia role and for self-defense, and this law violates it. But apparently it just barely violates it, since licensing and registration are ok.

Stevens, dissent # 1: Individual right, but only for those in the militia.

Breyer, dissent #2: individual right, but the DC ban is a reasonable response to urban crime. (basically this is Obama's position)

3. Since all the dissenters signed on to Breyer's dissent, they are all on record as saying there is an individual right for everyone, not just militia members.

4. I was happy to see the antis forced to discuss history and legislative intent. Once they're on that ground, they will lose.

Well, I made a pilgrimmage tonight. I met up with KLE at the NRA range and spoke with the range staff tonight. Apparently, the NRA is filing suit tomorrow in Chicago and NYC. Should be interesting.
KLE also sold me on an HK Squeeze cocker handgun. His was in .40 S&W. VERY sweet!

I also went to my local store after this and put money down on a "Fenty" (mayor of DC), one of the ISD Bulgarian AK-47s with the US parts and NATO stock. I figured I had to do this in honor of the SCOTUS actually showing some backbone and providing the beginnings of the correct Constitutional response.

Life is good.

He's getting a picture of it with a "thank you" note for not abiding by the Lower Court's decision.
