Hello from Qatar

0007, could be that it used to be like that. Where I am, I am on the malaria pills, but supposedly they don't need then further south in Qatar and therefore don't issue them to troops.

FWIW, we are starting to get eaten up with them here...mosquito nets are going up tonight.

Steve-

Understand. As I said I never got "bugged" with it but then I always tried to move fast when I heard the buzz. Had the same problem in Yemen of all places. I'm told that the preventative oral doses can have side effects that are almost as bad as the damn bug itself. Of course in the old days the DDT trucks would come around spraying and that was the end of the mosquito problem for a little while. Now-a-days the damn birds are more important then the people. :fire:

As an aside you might try getting a hold of some B-12(?) pills and dosing up your body with lhigh evels of it. Seems to change the body odor and the bugs look for "sweeter meat". Used to do that in FL when I had to go camping in the woods for my two week AT every year... :D Of course your friends might also start hanging back a little also.

Stay safe and let me know if I can send you anything from my part of the pit.

edited: might be a mix of B-6 and B-12. Been a few years since I had to use it...

0007, i didn't realize until then you were in Jordan. I've heard it's awesome.

Some folks say the Malaria pills make you have weird dreeams, but I haven't experienced that yet.

Don't know what I could use from Jordan, besides a grand tour, lol.

Hi guys, I'm up in Baghdad now, and I can say the chloroquine definitely gives you some funny dreams. That's the only side effect I've noticed personally. Better than malaria though, so it's probably not a bad idea.

Hey Nightcrawler, You workin for Dyncorp? Ran into a bunch of their guys when I transitioned through Qatar on the way up. Good folks. Hell of a job. If so, Hope they're paying you well. At least I work in a building with AC. :D

Serious note: Stay out of Iraq unless you're travelling with lots of buddies and they're all well armed. Also, try to avoid those RPG magnet NTV's. Don't want to be seen as a soft target around here, cause the locals are pretty good at spotting them. They love catching contractors.

Find some shade, and try to stay cool. I'm headed for the pool now. (so nice of Uday to have it built for us) :D :D

Too bad they won't let you carry FAL. I am sure in a pinch the FAL would be an advantage. I am glad things are going ok, I hope you get used to the heat.

Another Update

Hey hey, they let me off for the day!

My moral has improved considerably in the last few days. I heard from some people (okay, one person, and she's important to me) back home, and I know that everything's alright there. I got a day off, my first paycheck got mailed out, and things are coming along. It's amazing how such little things can improve ones temperment.

It's very hot and very humid here now, just in time for me to get put on the day shift. Oh goody.

MY multiple mosquito bites are still itching a little, but I"ve gotten some creme to take care of them. I broke out on my left forearm from something (unless it's just a multitude of small bug bites), but it's clearing up now.

Things have been quiet, mostly. Couple contractors got into a fight (apparently a lover's tryst between two women :scrutiny: ), little stuff like that, but nothing big or bad. This ain't a bad gig, really, and I don't mind being here.

I got a DSA catalog in the mail and have been drooling over that. I"ve been going back and forth about what kind of FAL I"m going to have them build me when I get home, LOL.

I also renewed my subscription to SWAT magazine by mail. I hope they can send to an APO address without any trouble.

I've bought myself a good folding knife, a CRKT M16-14SF knife, to carry with me. It's about all the protection I can manage, unless someone can send me a .357 in the mail. LOL

I've been putting together ideas for my next story, but until I can acquire a computer and get internet access in my room I won't be writing it. Still, this place makes for a very interesting setting...

Hey, glad you are doing well over there.

I'll be in that part of the world in a couple of months, courtesy of Uncle Sam.

Nightcrawler, it's good to hear from you.

Maybe I've got a screw loose, but that sounds like quite an adventure. I'd love it, if I could get into the military. :(

Please do take care. Let us know if there's anything you need and we'll get it to you.

Nightcrawler....

Do you know anyone at CFLCC HQ? I have a bunch of buds workign there...

Regards

Chuck

I'm back online! Internet cafe two days in a row. The limo drivers are starting to know me by name, LOL.

Couple things, for those who asked.. I'm not in the Army anymore. I'm over here as a private citizen, working for a defense contractor. It's nice because I don't live on base, can go wherever I want, and have generally a lot more personal freedom than military life allows. And I don't even know what the CFLCC HQ is, muchless anyone in there. I swear to GOD the military needs to lay off the acronyms....LOL

I went to a couple clubs last night. One was called Rydges, and everyone talked about how great it was. I got there, and it's just a crowded little bar full of drunk Brits and Aussies, and about five guys for every woman. So that was no fun.

I then went to a more popular place called "Cloud Nyn". Now that place was a night club! I haven't seen so many goregeous women in one place in my life. A bunch of guys I work with (both company and USAF security forces) were there too, and I had a good time. I ended up dancing with three beautiful stewardesses from Gulf Airlines. See, it's illegal to do this in the United States, but here they hire airline stewardesses based on how hot they are. And hey Skunky? Two were Korean, and the third was from Italy, but of Chinese descent! :neener:

By "dancing" I meant I awkwardly jerked arythmically to an excruciatingly long techno-pop song (at least it's not rap). It's not that I can't dance; at one point, I could swing, waltz, tango, cha-cha, you name it. But this stuff isn't "dancing" so much as it is "moving around to synthesized music". I felt like a moron, and realized why most guys don't hit that dance floor until they're pretty drunk.

Ah, the things we do to impress women, eh men? LOL

I almost got into a fight, too, actually. The place was packed so much that you could barely move around. While trying to get back to the balcony where our table was, I was bumped into by a very drunk dude, and almost got knocked over. In regaining my balance, I pushed him, and he pushed me. He then puts his hand around my shoulder, tries to grab my water bottle, and gets real close up in my face.

Now look, I know this is how people interact in Europe. But there are a couple things I don't like. Number one, my patience with falling-down-drunk people is very limited. Number two, I don't like it when guys start putting their grubby paws on me (note that this rule does not apply to the ladies, and yes, I know that's discrimination). And the dude just would NOT let go of me, and he would NOT get off of me.

Well, I got him off of me as his not-as-drunk girlfriend was apologizing, and walked away.

Not a bad place, though, even if overcrowded and loud. I'm going to go back on Friday, I think, as they're having some sort of contest wherein women will be given prizes based on how short their skirts are.

Now, if you've ever been to a Muslim country, you know that seeing women around town is rare enough, muchless women in miniskirts.

:D

I ordered a bunch of gear from Tactical Tailor yesterday, as it seems well made and it will be better than the stuff I'm issued. I can't wait to get it.

I've also prettymuch decided that I'm buying a Ruger GP100 .357 when I get home. Heck, I had a dream about one here.

I'm also going to make friends with one of the Qatari police that guards my villa. I want to check out that AUG he carries. :)

RE:

Hey NC good to hear you are making the best of things there.....regarding the GP100....I got one in April of this year, a KGP141, 4 inch full lug stainless...I love it....though some of the edges are kinda sharp (had to do some buffing etc special attention to the trigger) once done fun to shoot and accurate as can be. Go for it....gettin friendly with the police is a great idea...still....watch your 6 and stay frosty bud.....mack
