Thanks for checking in, glad to hear everything is going smoothly. BTW Shanghi McCoy says ditto ( he's on his way to the time clock) anyway stay safe and don't leave us hanging...:D

Glad to hear you made it safe. Good luck on not being called back on IRR. Im in the same boat as you with IRR, and it seems every other day someone in my unit is contacting me about a deployment or a potential deployment they might be sending me on.

Good to hear the trip there went fine.

You'll get used to the heat. It took me a bit getting used to the weather in Kuwait.

Gets pretty chilly there in the winter. Hope you took some warm clothes.

Do you have a PSC mailbox? If so let us know so we can send you some stuff from the Motherland.

Also, feel free to call on us for any needs that you cant get ahold of over there.

Stay safe.

If your employer does not provide Gatorade or something similar let me know and I will send you a container of the powdered stuff. I would tell you to stay cool, but it ain't gonna happen over there.

Thank you for the update!

Hope all goes well for you and stay safe!!!

Watch six.

Glad to hear that your happy and healthy, NC. Can't deny that I'm a bit jealous!

Holler if you need some supplies.

Salaam aleikum, es-sheikh!

Peace be upon thee, chief!

Here's some useful Arabic (possibly Saudi-specific):
"Areed rubiyan, min fadlak!" - "I'd like some prawns, please!"
"Areed siddiqi, min fadlak!" - "I'd like some moonshine, please!" (don't use if alcohol is haram (forbidden) in Qatar)
"Kif haalek?" - "How's it going?"
"Maffi mushkala" - "No problem"

Stay safe, but enjoy the adventure!

Update

Well, I made it back to the internet cafe. Sorry it's been awhile; I'm working seven days a week right now. I just got up early today to come to the internet cafe. I do have to work tonight.

I spoke briefly with a Qatari military police trooper last week, carrying an FNC. He let me look at his weapon. Seemed pretty nice. That's now four different rifles I've seen the Qataris carrying.

Things are pretty dull here, really. I don't get out as much as I'd like, but on my next day off I'm going to go to one of the western nightclubs and chase women for an evening. Perhaps I'll have better luck in this hemisphere than in the other one? We'll see. :D

Still no recall notice from the Army. I dunno what to think about that. On one hand, the Stars and Stripes said they were calling Engineers. On the other hand, another Stars and Stripes said they Army has such a gluttony of 21B (formerly 12B) Combat Engineers they're taking ten guys and changing their MOS to something else, involuntarily.

Honestly, I ETSed a month ago. I don't think the Army has even begun out-processing me yet. I probably won't get my discharge papers for another six months. In any case, there's nothing I can do about it, so no sense fretting, hey? :)

This job is sort of like the military, with a few major differences. The big one is that when you get off of work, you're DONE. There is no having the sergeant come snag you for a detail or something.

I"ve made a few friends here, and there are also some people I dislike, just like anywhere. The MPs and SPs I work with are mostly pretty cool.

I got tore up by mosquitos the other night, and it gets humid as hell here this time of the year. I thought this desert, with scarcaely any lakes or swamps to be had, would be the one place in the world I"d be safe from mosquitos, but they're as bad here as they are in Upper Michigan.

Yes, I can be sent packages. PM me if you really want. It might be awhile before I can get online again, though.

Thanks everybody.

Watch yourself with the mosquitos. They have cases of malaria show up there every now and then. Let us know what would be useful that you can't get there. How 'bout a case of sunscreen, heh, heh...

How does it feel to be a REMF Nightcrawler? LMAO

I'm up in the big bad place up north you guys hear bad things about. Are you at Al Udeid? Man, the "deid" is a COUNTRY CLUB compared to this place. This is the Wild Wild West up here! You gotta come up sometime! :) Luckily, it is cooler than the deid, that is about the only saving grace. I couldn't believe the heat in Doha.

BTW, check the mall on the west side of the bay...wow, that place is nice.

I will come down for R&R in a few months, I'll give you a holler.

OH!!! There is a GREAT Lebonese restaurant downtown, just up from the crossed swords...it'll be on your left if you go under the swords.

stay up

I am going over to a thing in Kuwait in few months. I will be hitting Bahrain and then too your neck of the woods for a couple of days. i will pm ya when I am heading out. You can drink in your town. So mabe a cold one.

Keep your wits about you. You are in the safest place in the box. But, You are a target. And just fyi. NSA probly reads all your e-mails if you are sending from any ARCENT pcs or desk tops. So be careful what you write. You dont want them crawling up your ass with a micro scope.

Stay up bro..................stevo

My advice? Trust no one - especially not the indigenous population. Watch your back at all times. Let no one arrest, detain, or disarm you except for the American MP's. Treat our "allies" with the same suspicion. Keep a hand on your Beretta when being approached and demand that police officers show the proper identification. Sleep with one eye open. Remain alert. Come back alive.

Steve -
Having spent onwards of 20 years hanging around this part of the world, I can tell you that on occasion we would be told to be aware that there was a malaria problem in the Qatar/Eastern Provence area. Never had to deal with it myself, just something I was happy NOT have to deal with - or have anyone I know have to deal with. Not to mention a few other lovely mosquito-borne pathegens...
The moral of this little diatribe is that I would strongly avoid being bitten by mosquitos regardless of where you are.
