Hello high road, i have a question about a SHTF/Hunting and plinking rifle

I'm in the army,been back from Iraq about 6 months(OIF3) , and i have a bonus of about 1k dollars coming to me and i have several weapons already ,Glock 30,Glock 21SF,both in 45 acp, Maverick 88 12gauge, and SAR-1, now i have been in love with FN-FAL's,M1A's, Garands and had a cetme at one point, never the resourses to purchase another serious rifle, The question I have is the rifle i buy will be used for the purposes above Plinking/Range , Hunting maybe and lord forbid SHTF, but i am insistent on a solid,RELIABLE, accurate and ergonomic rifle in 308/7.62x51 being this will be my first real Battle rifle outside of the Cetme i sold(bad idea), now with the blessing from my lovely wife,(i know I'm not the only one),I want/need a solid battle rifle which to chose? Thanks God Bless

p.s I'm just not ready to buy a ar/m4 configuration in 5.56 , carried one for a year , i'll pass

Welcome home.

If I read your post correctly, you want to purchase a battle rifle in .308/ 7.62 NATO with the money from your bonus. I'd get the M1A. Reliable, accurate, nice capacity, and it's a rifle for life.

Get it. You'll be very happy. I'd get a springfield loaded, with synthetic stock.
 
You could check the "for sale" forums here, and know that odds are you aren't going to get ripped off, and have continued access to the seller for questions as to their particular product.

My advice would be a FAL. They're heavy as sin, but the adjustible gas valve just screams "option" to me--if you're running good ammo, or crappy foriegn surplus, your rifle will function; all depends on how the budget is treating you.

Saiga (if it's accurate enough for you) fits your other criteria well. And you could buy three of them for the price of one FAL ...

(Or buy one and some ammo, or one in .223, one in .308, and one in 7.62x39 -- which would get your .308 covered, and leave fun for later, too ;))

Welcome back and thank you for your service. Though yhtomit beat me to it, i to was going to recommend the Saiga. They're made in the same factory as AK-47's but are a bit sportier looking. That being said with the amount of money you have availiable you can definitely customize it to make it look however you'd like. There are quite a few websites dedicated to customizing them, such as Saigia-12.com (or.net... something) and you can pretty much get them to look however you like. While you are shopping I would suggest taking a look at a DPMS AR in .308. They have a new model that's called the tac 20 I believe with a 20" barrel and also a carbine M-4 style both of which will be very familiar to you. I don't own a 308 AR yet but I'm taking a hard look at the DPMS models. The reason is they are known to be VERY accurate right out of the box. Reliablity is very good also. If you have any thoughts on using optics the AR's are much easier to configure. They run about $1100 around here. M1A's are nice (I have an all GI pre-ban) but they are not as accurate out of the box and are difficult to mount optics. If you get a chance take a look at any of the DPMS models that have the forward assist you may like them.
 
FAL all the way. I have 2; super easy to disassemble and work on, rugged and reliable, cheap mags. Can't beat 'em.
