I recently got a rarely used Ruger .44 Carbine. This is the old tube fed model, not the magazine fed one.

I took it apart to clean and oil as it had been sitting a long time. Everything went back together right until the end. When I rotate the action into the stock it goes most of the way in, but doesn't sit quite flat. If I put the barrel band on it will push it into position (putting some tension between the band and barrel) but it doesn't want to sit there naturally. I cannot find any obstructions or damage anywhere.

Has anyone else had this problem? Did the stock just flex while sitting in storage? Getting the action out took some careful time - the stock was *really* grabbing it.

It is very possible that you did not completely rotate the bolt to its locked position when first reassembling. This is the very first step, If you did that correctly, then you may have a problem with alignment of the small end of the piston which may be put in backwards. The small end should be pointed ore facing the rear or the receiver end. Never seen anyone try this but you never know.

There are some very specific reassembly instructions for proper alignment of all parts on this carbine. If you've never done it before, your in for a surprise. Your best bet (if you haven't done so already) is to download a copy of the manual which is available in two files depending on which year your carbine was made.

Good luck!;)
