I realize that you can't give the answer for me, but I'd like some opinions on what would be a reasonable prospect. I also didn't know if I should post this on a rifle forum, but it involves a rifle so I guess this will do.

I've always wanted to get into shotguns. AND I still have no .22 rifle! This is a must for any serious rifle shooter. I'm looking at a Remington 870 or a 10/22 mainly for plinking. I assume my SKS is a good enough SHTF rifle. No SD for either of these, just some messin around out in the desert. I live in LA county, where you cannot fire a rifle unless at a range, but you can discharge a shotgun so long as you are a reasonable distance from the nearest house. Major dilemma I know...

A shotgun for plinking? Huh? I can't see a shotty for anything but hunting, clays or HD. Maybe I'm weird.

One can never go wrong with a .22 rifle...a 10/22 or a Marlin Model 60 are lots-o-fun for very little money. Spending an afternoon knocking over tin cans with a .22 filled many an afternoon of my youth.

10/22, and don't post here again till you own one :neener:

Seriously though, a .22 is a great thing to have. It gives you more trigger time than anything else. Buying a bulkpack or brick is cheap.

The 870 is the pump gun to which all others are compared. However, you can have a Mossberg 500 with the same features for less money. Around $300 to $400ish.They put out a 'combo' that comes with a rifled with sights, slug barrel and a ribbed multi-choked smooth bore too. About $350. You can even get a .50 cal BP muzzle loading barrel that goes on the same action. Long ago, you could get an 8 round, 20" barreled, cylinder bored, parkerized M500 that had a bayonet lug for an M-16 bayonet. Not that it'd likely be legal in CA. now, even if they were still made. You can still get an eight or 9 round M500 though. Look under 'Special purpose'. http://www.mossberg.com/default.asp?section=home
There's a dealer list too.
Nothing beats a .22 for "messin around out in the desert." or anywhere else. The 10/22 is a dandy .22 that has all kinds of aftermarket stuff you can put on. Everything from very large mags to folding stocks. A folding stock is kind of useless, but you can get one. You can even gussy it up into a super accurate target rifle. Not exactly cheap though.
