I have in my position a sword from the American Civil War. It's what I believe to be an M1840 NCO sword made by Collins & Co.

My google-fu has brought me to some sites that say that very few were made (around 800) but I've seen values all over the map.

It's condition is hard to describe. There is some pitting on the blade and the blade itself is slightly bent in the last 1/4. Also one of the clam shells has been removed. No scabbard either.

It's been in my family as long as I can remember. It's history is unknown as my earliest relative immigrated to the US long after the ACW ended.

Thanks for any help.

You have to provide pictures.

If there's no guard or scabbard and the blade is bent and pitted it isn't going to hold much value.

Agreed.

There are a lot of swords on Ebay, lots of fake Civil War NCO also, coming out of India. You have to look at "sold" prices instead of insane asking prices.

However, if it is missing pieces and is heavily rusted, you will find that collectors want like new pieces with everything on them. Just being old does not mean that much.
