Help ID this Colt revolver

Can anyone chime in & give a better idea of what revolver I'm looking at getting into? I have very limited info because the seller isn't sure of what he has either. It's a Colt chambered in 357 mag, from what's understood this revolver came out just before the Colt Python. any help is greatly appreciated.

It is a Colt .357 Magnum, no I'm not being a wise a$$,, That is what the Model is, no name or number , just Colt .357 Magnum. Deluxe model of the Trooper, 1953 to 1961

Too bad the full checkered grips are beat up, they are normally worth a good bit all by themselves. There is a guy on the S&W board who restores grips. I don't know if he would stoop to work on Colt wood or not, but it would not hurt to ask. Probably not cheap.

Yes indeed it is a Colt 357. Just a couple of observations though:

They are fine revolvers, but that one looks a though it wasn't very well cared for in it's life. I can certainly understand finish/grip wear, but I noticed that the left hand stock seems to be broken. I would not pay more than $350 in it's present condition and that is assuming that it is in good mechanical shape.

It looks like my Colt Trooper (the original Trooper that had the same action as the Official Police and Python).

thank you guys so much for the input. i am little hesitant to pick it up, the seller seems to be in the 700 dollar range. oh well!

The 700 dollar range is too high. The Colt 357 is an excellent gun sharing the same action (albiet without the extra attention) as the Python. It was made from 54 till 62 when it was absorbed into the Trooper line by adding that chambering to the trooper. It's one of the harder to find guns since total production was only around 15,000. This was Colts top of the line revolver a year until overshadowed by the Python. Unfortunately that one has not been well taken care of.

Looks like an ex-cop gun. Cracked grips are pretty common on those as some folks' heads are hard.
