Help ID this rifle

My father in law just got this semi-auto Remington rifle from his mother. It's chambered in .35 rem, and doesn't really have any other identifying marks. Sorry for the lousy pics, taken with my phone. Anybody know what it is?

It is either a Model 8 or a model 81

Based on the straight stock, I'd say it's a Model 8. Look at the barrel where it meets the receiver. There should be some markings there, as well as on the left side of the receiver.
