Help identify 7.62x39

I just bought some 7.62x39 in a pyramid shaped box with 25 rounds in it. It is brass cased ammo with the numbers 13 and 88 on it. I am assuming the 88 is year of manufacture and the number 13 to be the factory. I can't find any info on this ammo, and the guy selling it just said it was from his stockpile and was trying to get rid of it. I bought one box just to find out what it was, for 10 bucks. Any ideas as to what it is? Sorry no pics, I dropped my camera off the bed of my truck into a mud puddle and it no longer works.

It is South African milsurp, good non-corrosive ammo. The 13 is actually a shortened R1M3, the model designator, 1988 is correct.
