I'm considering purchasing a 1911 and restoring it to stock (issue) condition, but I'm not sure exactly what it is and what it's worth. The serial number on the frame/lower receiver is 243xxx, which ought to put it with the 1918 production of 1911s. However the slide/upper receiver says 1911 A1. It is properly marked as "United States Property" and "US Army." My suspicion is that it's an Army armory mixmaster, which is okay, and then some person put a custom rear sight on it and an angled front sight, along with custom grips, and I'm not sure that the hammer is quite right. All that can be fixed, but I'm having a hard time figuring out what it's worth. I'll try to upload a photo of it.

Thanks for any comments.

It looks like parts gun to me. If the slide and frame were put together in an armory, they'd have matching bluing. If it's cheap, buy it as a shooter, but there's no point in trying to "fix" it or rebuild it because the slide and frame are from two different guns.

+1

It is what it is, a "parts gun" shooter, maybe.

There is nothing GI left that hasn't been milled, drilled, replaced, fluffed, buffed, and re-blued.

Well, heck. I might buy it anyway because it's about the closest thing to a USGI one that I'm going to be able to afford in the near future. Can't believe how expensive those have become.
