I spoke with my father today. A coworker was telling him about this rifle he received. It is a bolt action, octagon barrel, and has an oddly curved bolt. Sort of like a backwards "J". The man says the muzzle is wide enough to fit a grown man's thumb. He was told it was German.

I know the information I have given is very vague, but I was bitten by the curiousity bug.

He is supposedly bringing it out to my father's house sometime next week. I might have to make a trip out there to see it for myself.

thanks

Two guesses, sight unseen.
1. A sporter version of the Mauser 1871
2. A Sporting version of the Prussian Needle gun.

It could be any number of things. You need to take a look and take careful note of any markings and proof marks on the barrel and receiver. Photos would be great but if not also describe the stock and sights. Was it hacked or is it intact? What's the patina like on the steel and wood?
