Went to the gun shop today. Always check the used 1911 section first. There was the 1911 I've been looking for forever. It was an Argentine made one, that looked like it was carried a lot and shot a little. An old one, with the characteristically quaint numerical styling in the serial numbers, and every part matched in serial number. The barrel was original, yet the bore was sharp and clean. The highly polished steel had that nice old wear pattern in the bluing. All the small parts were machined, and beautifully crafted. It functioned perfectly, and had a sweet trigger. I was in love. And they were asking the paltry sum of $350 for it. No matter how good a price, I always try to get them to bring it down. Got them down to $325. I was ecstatic, because I thought it was under priced to start with. "I'll take it," I said. The salesman seemed happy, and took me right to the register. He started me on the paperwork, and then it happened. He notices something he thought unusual about the tag on the gun. He looked closer, and realized that a new employee had taken a gun which was in the back on reserve for a customer and put it in the glass case. Someone else had it on layaway already. My heart dropped. I've been a mess for hours now, and can't snap out of it. I feel the way you do when your sweetheart drops you for someone else. Been moping and can't get it out of my mind. This ever happen to you?

Their mistake is your gain!!
I'd be talking to the owner.
Unfortunately, it was the owner's son I was dealing with. I started dealing with a regular salesperson, and he would have handled the whole thing himself, and would probably never have noticed a problem had I not asked for a better price. When I asked for a better price the owner's son took over the sale, and gave me $25 off. If I could go back in time, I'd never ask for a discount, and the salesclerk would have let it go out the door with me.

a friend had one like it

My friend put a down payment (kinda like layaway but no paper work was started) on an MIA once, at my local gunstore. Then, the salesperson sold it to someone else because that customer offered more money for it than him. Needless to say, my friend was pissed and so as the others we told this story to.
The store owner fired the salesperson after finding out what happened and returned my friend's down payment.

You could always console yourself by ordering an Ed Brown 1911...:D
Slight price disparity there, and besides, it just wouldn't be the same. That gun had history and character. You cannot recreate that. An Ed Brown was not what I was looking for. Besides, I already have a Cobra Carry.

Keep looking, it wasn't meant to be. I recently got a very good Sistema that I'm in love with, paid $500. Just last week I found one a bit better for $450. Oh well, still love the one I got. They're still around.

Does yours have all matching serial numbers?

The one I got is all matching, including the MSH, but not the mag. The barrel isn't great, but it still shoots nice groups at 25ft., assuming that I do my part. The one I saw last week had matching frame, slide, and barrel. I didn't really inspect it too closely, I was afraid I'd be unable to leave without it!

Where was it located? :what:

It's the Curse of the "Evil Quibbler"!

See, you asked the price to be too low. Good luck! You'll find another.

You know, I got my first Rolex similar to this: I walked into Tiffany's, MI Ave in Chicago, and they had a BEAUTIFUL Rolex (stainless) for $900?! I asked to see it, and they affirmed the price. Well, it was miss-marked. The salesman had neglected to put the first (thousands) place. They sated, "Well, by law we have to permit you 90 minutes to decide if you want it at that price."

I walked out, found my wife and returned to buy my first Rolex. :)

Snicker, snicker. Yeah, I felt guilty--gonna bankrupt Tiffany! That as-impossible-as assuming that Victoria has any "secrets" remaining--where the heck could she "hide" them?!

Anyhow, and I am now off topic. Years later, then I decided to go to doctoral school I sold that Rolex for more than 3X the amount. That's called clear profit. :)

I'll say. Was it the Submariner?

A bit of bad luck for you...

But put yourself in the guys shoes who had it on layaway only to (almost) lose it due to a clerical error - imagine how upset he'd have been when he came back in to pick up the little gem that he (unfortunately) got to first.

It's a bummer but there'll be others...Karma owes you one now :)
