If the belt is push-through, buy an M60 machinegun. Cut off the barrel and remove the firing pin and bolt spring. Attach an electric motor to the bolt. Load belt and turn on motor. Pick up cartridges and links, place in separate piles. This will prove that, contrary to previous reports, an M60 is good for something.

If the belt is pull-out, buy a M1919 Browning. Proceed as above.

Next question?

Seriously, just grab the back of the round and give it a twist while pulling it back. It is easier than it looks, just tedious.

FWIW, here's the process I use.

Start with an ammo can full of linked ammo. Pull out a linked segment.

Put the link up on the edge of the can, with the bullet up, primer down. One bullet over the edge of the box, the link resting on the edge of the box.

Whack the point of the bullet with the handle of a screwdriver (don't use a good one, this WILL mar the handle.)

The bullet will pop out and the lnk will fall.

Move the next bullet over the edge of the can, with the link resting on the can.

Repeat.

You can get pretty fast with this method. When I first heard it, I was worried about bullet set-back. I was reassured that MilSurp is crimped hard enough that I wouldn't see any. So far, its true.
