Help loading 357 mag

I want load some 357 mag but all I have is small primers & the manual calls for magnum, should I not try this? What would happen if I load them with non-magnum primers?

What powder? Ball powders like H110/W296 require magnum primers but you're fine with standard small pistol with others.

2400 does not require mag primers.. just normal ones.

Regular primers are slightly better with most powders. W296 and H110 need magnum or rifle primers. HS-6 probably could use magnum primers. Use normal primers with everything else, unless SPM's is all you have.

I have Unique, TG, Bullseye, PP-38, 2400, and H110. So I should exclude H110 until I get magnum primers?

Correct. Of the powders you listed only H110 requires a magnum primer. 2400 actually performs better for me when set of by a standard primer and it will produce good ammo. What type of bullet are you going to use and what weight?

(I'm guessing you meant HP-38, not PP-38)

I use non magnum primers with H110 in 357 as well as 30 Carbine, 44 Magnum, 50AE and 500 S&W. Never had any problems.

I actually get lower ESs(extreme spreads) with std primers when loading H-110.

I loaded Unique, Bullseye, and 2400 behind a 158 grain lswc this week, all with regular CCI SPP. Informal and only 6 each, all at one target @15 yards. Bullseye grouped the best for me, and the 2400 gave an OK group with a very satisfying palm thumping recoil.

I am thinking of loading the Bullseye for my 3" SP101 and the 2400 for my 6" Security six.

I load exclusively with H110 or 296 using magnum primers and groups are as tight can be, regardless of the bullet, 110 gr. - 158 gr. jacketed. Even my snubby's don't open up with those loads. But having tried standard primers on one occasion produced terrible results, including higher pressures and powder blowing back in my face, some still burning.

Yes, of the powders you listed H110 would be the only that requires magnum primers.

I loaded H110 with 158g RNFP, WSP, 16.5g & this is what the chrono read:

Also loaded 6.5g of Unique 158g LSWC alo 1,558, all o them fed out of my 1894c without a problem.

I've been using 4.8 grains of Bullseye, SP primers, and 158 grain LSWC for my 357 target loads for years. They are very accurate in all my 357s. I would only use the size primer shown in the loading data that I was using.
